Or did he? Set a dukes dog proof on my way to the stand at a different feeder and checked it on the way back to camp. First Thing I noticed was the trap was no longer stuck in the ground where I set it, next thing I noticed was a lot of blood, 3rd thing was no coon, 4th was wait there is a bone sticking out of the trap lol. I have a hard time believing this coon ripped his hand off that cleanly that quickly therefore I'm going with a coyote or something else grabbed him up ripped him off the trap and went off to eat him. What are your thoughts?

I've seen them chew their own foot off trying to get out. Coyotes at my lease never eat the coons I take to the bone yard. But one may have been hungry enough.

X 2 on what Bolt Guy said. I have seen them chew them off also.

Plus he couldn't have been in the trap for more than an hour or two.i set it on the way out and checked it on the way in. Not sayings it's no possible bc I know it is but seems unlikely for that short of a time frame.

Coyote, or poor swivel action that led to broke leg at joint and twist out...never seen anything chew above capture point...seen poor swiveling and improper trap use result in animal escapes like this that people automatically assume is a chew out.

I'll get a picture of how I have the trap set tomorrow but I don't think it was improper and I don't think it was the swivels bc the trap could easily spin the way I found it.

Somewhere along the line, seems that the swivel failed long enough to cause a problem or the raccoon torked at wrong angle to cause break at joint...my opinion, site unseen. After that, swivel could be working just fine, but too late. Improper trap use/selection and swivel failure often leads one to thinking an animal chewed out when it really didn't , generally speaking...not saying that you used the wrong trap as it is obviously designed for raccoons.

I will add I've prob caught 20'raccoons with that same exact trap and set up and never had one escape. I guess I should have had it in the game cams view and then we would know for sure. Here is another one I just caught tonight. This trap def needs to be moved away from the barbed wire but it's been very productive.

Yup...move it away from fence...that likely caused the problem I mentioned above. Anchor at ground level to help reduce injuries and keep animal more comfortable. Good luck!

Have pic of trap site in question? Was trap all wrapped up like that one? Asking for problems when you give them opportunity to wrap up like that...especially on the vertical

Get some wolf fang earth anchors or equivalent and chunk the tpost...they will entangle and torque eventually the way you have it.
