Any Remington experts out there? Just bought a 7x57 Mauser for the wife and gun has what may be a pressure point where the wood stock and the black forearm tip are put together. Is this pressure pt intended or just a manufacturing goof? Seller said that 4th & 5th shot moved up and right, 5th more so than 4th.

It is a factory "intended" pressure point. And FWIW, I'd be hesitant to remove it. Some rifles with lightweight barrels actually shoot better with it in place. As for the vertical stringing, that could be "shooter error" or it could indeed be caused by the stock contact. The heating of the barrel also comes into play. But bear in mind that the rifle is designed to be a lightweight hunting rifle ... not a bench gun. I'd concentrate on where the first shot out of a cold barrel goes in relation to the point of aim and the consistency it can do that. If it regularly shoots to point of aim with a cold barrel on a day to day basis I'd call it good and be happy. That is an excellent lightweight hunting rifle that should serve you well.

It depends on how the action and barrel meet up to the stock. Some stocks the pressure point is planned. On one customers' rifle once, it was a wood stock rifle, and had major pressure points at the forend, along the stock, and under/just forward of the chamber end of the barrel. The stock had a strange lateral upside down "V", that the barrel rode on for the first 2" forward of the recoil lug. After that, it had pressure points about every 3"-4", and hard pressure at the forend. I opened up the stock and got rid of the pressure points every 3"-4", but the V at the chamber end was part of what held the barrel up in the stock, and the forend contact held it in place at the other end. There was no getting rid of those 2 pressure points. This will certainly create inconsistent groups when shooting, and cause it to walk around. There's nothing you can do about it if you keep that stock. It's a 2-3 shot rifle at that point.

that pressure point is intentional, but I have removed them and had little difference in POI. I agree the walking string is more likely a heat issue than a stock issue.

Savage Sierra's are the same gun/class, and are free float pillar bedded, and rapid 4th shots can move a little....

Thanks, guys. Now I can focus on loading for that first shot. This is going to be wife's gun hopefully for another elk hunt in 2017. The 7x57 AI is just physically too long and awkward for her.

I un-stocked my .243 788 before this season to free-float it. It too has a 'V' like this in front of the recoil lug. I left that but opened up the rest of the stock. It shot Fed Fusion 95gr sub-MOA, 3 shots at 100 yards. I called it good and my dad took 5 deer with it this season.

This gun has that same V in the stock. I wondered if the gun had 2 pressure points.

The gun went to the range and based on what I saw, first thing to be done is a bedding job. Couple of targets had two shots touching but not consecutive shot's. One step at a time.
