On New Year's Eve my wife was able to take down old warrior 10 point we called Johnny. This deer was very visible on camera but always seemed to elude you while in the stand. Last year we figured he was a 5 1/2 year old short tined 9. After not being able to harvest him last yr we were hoping to get him early this yr before he started running our younger deer off.

Last Friday afternoon my wife and I park way away and walked to the stand he has been frequenting lately. When we got to the stand at about 3pm he was already there with a doe and a few other bucks. As we snuck in the box blind he chased the doe off and I thought he was gone and our chances were probably done for that evening. A little while later several other bucks and does showed up and started feeding and milling around the feeder. We noticed that several of the younger bucks were staring off to our right and bristling up. Turns out johnny was locked down with that doe and had her held off in the brush away from the other bucks. Bucks would start to go over there and he would run them out but never presented us with a good shot.

Fast forward to Saturday, we were supposed to head home for a New Years party that night but the wife decided she wanted to stay and just spend it at the ranch. Didn't hurt my feelings at all. It was already almost 4pm and I told her we should go back to that stand and see if we could get johnny. About 4:30pm we park the truck about a qtr mile from the stand and start walking. About 50yds from the stand a doe bolts out about 100yds in front of us across a pipeline. I looked to the left and johnny was right behind her. I gave the wife the 257 weatherby and told her if he stops shoot him. There were 3 other bucks that were behind him and he stopped and turned to head them off. I told her to squeeze. Bang!! You could hear the bullet hit and I knew she had hit him. I immediately walk to the spot he was standing and find a good amount of blood. About that same time she asks what's that shinning over there? I replied your deer! She made a great shoulder shot kneeling from about a 125 yds. Could the more proud of her!!
