I just sighted in my muzzleloader. Should i clean it much or leave it fouled for my hunt?

I have always cleaned. BP or substitutes are extremely corrosive on barrels.

Clean it or you may regret it later.

I agree clean it. If it is an in-line you can always shoot a cap without a load before you hunt.

I am new to this. I suggest cleaning it after each use. If it is an inline, remember to clean and regrease the breech plug. They sell a special grease for this, or you can use anti-seize compound. I also sighted in my ML today. I am going hunting tomorrow.

Okay will do, i ran hoopes bore cleaner and a couple of patches but did not scrub with bronze brush and do heavy duty cleaning. I will make sure to get crud off. I will shoot a cap before hunt. That should help right?

I would definitely clean it. Is it an inline, flint lock or percussion lock. I have only owned percussion lock muzzleloader rifles. If you have one of these then get a nipple wrench or wrap some tape around some pliers so not to rough up the nipple and twist it off, remove the wedge and take the barrel out of the stock. Then get a bucket with hot soapy water and put the nipple end of the barrel in the bucket, take a cleaning patch and push it in with a cleaning jag and then pull the cleaning rod up and down to get the soap and water to work up and down inside the barrel. Make sure to use very hot water so the heated barrel will dry out better so you won't have to worry about rust. Also get yourself a fouling scraper to use at the end of your ramrod. A vent pick or needle is also good to have on hand in case your nipple gets debris covering the flash hole. Then just run some dry patches through it after it looks dry to be sure and then run a lubed patch through it to seal the barrel. Just remember to run a dry patch through it before you shoot it again to take away any bore butter left from sealing the barrel. Congrats on getting a muzzleloader.

Great advice from bowbuilrer1971, just forget about the cleaning solutions you normally use with regular rifles. Soap and whot water are the best solutions. Even after it is clean stay

away from petroleum products, as he suggests, bore butter is good. bg

Wait....am I the only one that cleans my smokepole in the shower?
Actually makes it easier with the long barrels....
Pistols and cannons still get the sink though.
Final rinse in hot water and hang it for a little while with muzzle down.
The warm metal will dry pretty quickly so you can preserve it.

And like everybody else already said but it can't be said enough: Clean it now or regret it later!

Id recommend using Blackhorn 209, if you have an inline with 209 primers.

It is one of the cleanest powders out there. Generally doesnt produce enough soot in the barrel stopping you loading another shot.

I would still recommend you clean it after you shoot it. This powder is often labeled as the smokeless powder of muzzle loading. You clean it withe the same stuff you do for your centerfire rifles

I tried windex and it seems to work as well...not sure of long term effects.

Always clean it after you shoot it....and leave the barrel dry with no oil. At the end of the season when you store it ...run a patch with some gun oil on it...and remember to get the oil out before you shoot it next year.

On the range, I run a cleaning patch after each shot, then the hot soapy water when I get home. I shoot Pyrodex.

I only use Goex FFG in my ML. After each shot I blow down the barrel...this reduces hard fouling. I usually clean only after season ends. I store in a gun safe with a golden rod to reduce humidity. I snap 2 or 3 percussion caps then load...70 grains FFG and a tight patched .490" round ball and leave it loaded all season. Have never had a problem with rust or misfires. FYI I did leave my rifle loaded over a year without negative results. My son once left his ML loaded for a couple of years...3 50 grain Pyrodex Pellets and a Sabot. We took it out and after one misfire it fired just fine.

Clean after each use. If you don't while using black powder it will absorb moisture and can foul ignition port. Been using hot soapy water for 40 years. Remove barrel from stock Fill bucket with hot soapy water insert nipple end of barrel in bucket and plunge cleaning rod up and down water will siphon up through barrel. Using hot water barrel will absorb heat and all moisture will evaporate. I then soak with WD 40. Not a single spot of rust on any of my muzzle loaders using this process

Clean it after each use. Hot soapy water. Pull the plug or nipple and clean them. Make sure everything is dry before replacing nipple. Be sure to grease plug before replacing in an inline.I also like to use WD40 or something like it if the rifle will sit for a while. If using this, allow the rifle to sit muzzle down on a rag for a day or so.

I've been using a common mix of Windex and Murphy's oil soap for years as my only cleaner and a patch lube. I don't have a thing against using water for cleanup, but I have good results with my mix 1/3 Murphy's and 2/3 Windex. It lubes the patches well and dissolves the fouling like it should..while drying pretty quick.

I don't patch between shots unless I cant get the next bullet seated. I have never had to patch between shots.

I use pyrodex and buffalo ballets.

I clean with hot soapy water, air dry and wipe down with a lite coat of oil and hit the barrel with an oiled patch.

Before firing I will run a dry patch or two and fire a cap then load.
