I have seen a mis-quote from John Wayne on several High fence vs Low Fence threads.
I have no idea if John Wayne is actually referring to high fences or not.
I'm just giving the real quote below.

The quote is from a book by John Wayne’s wife Pilar Wayne
John Wayne: My Life With the Duke by Pilar Wayne

The real quote reads as follows:
John Wayne Quote:
“A man's got to have a code, a creed to live by, no matter his job.
There is a difference in hunting wild game and shooting wild game.
A hunter will only kill an animal that is allowed to roam free.
A shooter will kill an animal that has been pen raised and not allowed to roam free.
I have no stomach for the later, no matter how large the pen is.”

As much as I respect the Duke, the last sentence isn't even logical.

The quote is...

A man has to have a code, a way of life to live by.
– John Wayne, the book "My Life With the Duke"

The remainder is added by folks with an agenda.

My guess is it's more about canned hunts than high fencing. He died in 1979. Not to say there weren't any high fences then but it was much rarer than today and there was no such thing as social media, cell phones, or the internet. Any high fence debate would have largely been only between the landowners bordering the fence. And back then people actually talked to one another more than they do today.

Now Earl's last sentence makes complete sense.

What if he was pen raised then allowed to roam free? Is that OK?

As much as I like the Duke, he has no bearing on my life choices.

Do you have the book to verify the quote?

It's interesting, when you do a google search of that quote, the only hit is this thread. I'll stick by my statement in another thread - he never said it.

I doubt amazon would sell magnets based on a quote if it came from this site only

I have absolutely no doubt he said "A man's got to have a code, a creed to live by, no matter his job." He did not say the rest, which is what is at issue. The rest is not on the magnet. On another note, Amazon does not verify any quotes on things like magnets, they just list them for sale so that argument holds no water anyway.

John Wayne obviously shot one tied up in Rio Bravo bc 2 years earlier the mule deer was at the same water hole and looked the exact same in Old Yeller.

I Feed Indian Corn. The deer love it and all the colors make them stay at the feeder longer.

And if you can play the tape......and I heard it for myself it would not influence my hunting decisions based on what a Hollywood actor does or says. Even one I liked like John Wayne. hammer
