I've dropped an axis in his tracks with a 150 grain.

Whatever grain you currently shoot. No need to change bullets for axis.

150 grain is great but 165+ kills their soul!

Axis die pretty easy. Shoot whatever is most accurate in your rifle. I have a Remington 700 BDL in 30-06 that I spent a lot of time working up a custom load that gave me the best accuracy. I was pretty good with 150 grain bullets, but when I went up to 165 grains, it was much better. When I'm practicing a lot, I can get one inch and groups of five, and a few times I was at 3/4 of an inch. I never got down to one inch with any combinations of bullets and powder with 150 grain bullets.

When I quit reloading, I found that Federal Premium ammo gave me the same results in 165 grain bullets!!!!

Bullet construction is just important, if not more important than weight. Shoot something that expands well....but stays together

The optimum bullet for non-magnum 30 caliber rifles is the 165 grain, and fortunately we have lots of options to choose from. I would definitely go with a controlled expansion bullet. I have had outstanding results with the Nosler accubond, I have used it on every thing from Pronghorn to Elk. I am pushing them with 56 grains of IMR4350 and out of my Remington 721 it is right at 2800 fps. rifle

Controlled expansion bullet should be priority, since you want to limit the amount of damage to that great tasting meat!
