Anyone that feeds protein. Did you have a broadcast feeder with the free choice protein feeder until they got used to it or just the protein feeder alone? I'm having trouble getting them to eat it

Tried to get em to eat it in the broadcast feeders mixed with corn. All the corn was eaten but the protein wasted. Put it out in free choice feeders and after a little time to get used to it, I can't keep em full.

Used and still use, a broadcast feeder. I started by mixing one bag in 350 lbs. Then, gradually add more protein at each re-fill. It takes a while but they'll end up eating it all. It's getting into the hard times for them, the bucks are trying to recover (still) from the run and the does are mostly all preggo. They start looking for the mineral mix that makes up the protein.

Rifles are similar to boats and young women...there's no end to how much money you can pour into them without making them any more useful.

Free choice... I started by dumping piles of corn on the ground.... once they started eating it id put a bag of protein out with it... then came the free choice feeder... I didn't even have to split the mix.. just put some corn under it and they figured it out in a week... now its hard to keep full. I also have one I set out a few miles down the road and in a years time I still havnt got any to eat out of it

I feed straight 20 percent FMC in Graham. I use a 1K free choice and started them out with 1 bag of corn to every 3 protein. Hand mix it as you fill the feeder. They were on it by the second go round. Still hit it strong to this day.

600 lb free choice feeder. Mixed a few bags of corn in the bottom of the feeder when filling. Almost empty next time I checked it.

I think it depends on the size of your hunting lease and what your neighbors are doing. 100 acres and you're the only one feeding protein while your neighbors are not, I would not feed protein. 100 acres and your neighbors are all feeding protein with the same management plan, I would feed protein .

We feed protein on 3000 acres, our neighbors do not.

What are the names of those good protein in 50 pound bags? Or does any deer protein from any feed and seed store work?

I see even more of a reason to feed it or more free choice than anything if the neighbors arnt feeding..

First bag is corn only. Mix the next bag then protein only. Camera shows bucks at all tubes eating. They love it. Many great benefits for them and the hunters.

I mixed my first few bags of protein with corn in my free choice feeder last march. It took them almost two months to touch it. Now I can't keep it full. Once they figured it out they tear it up.

I always thought mixing protein with corn in a broadcast feeder would clog it up...

Is that not the case?

It can clog a feeder if enough moisture gets to the protein. It'll cause the pellets to swell, and you could have a nasty mess on your hands.

I started with a big pile of protein on the ground under my broken feeder. The deer found it real quick. I got the feeder fixed and back online and the transition was seamless. It has a corn slinger right next to it.
