I learned a bigger pen is best and the deer still move after 9 am. Also learned what a good feeling you have when you take a deer that you know you purposely passed on last year.

I hunted a blind hard for a few days and the day we leave a guy kills a wall hanger out of the same blind

it's all luck..
I hunted a blind hard for a few days and the day we leave a guy kills a wall hanger out of the same blind The sport is filled with millions of stories much like yours. And let me guess, it was his first time to hunt the stand all season.

I learned that I work too much during deer season.  Boy you said a mouth full with this one. Looking at my turnaround schedule the upcoming season it will be the same way.

I learned that Wyoming mule deer don't have the same kind of travel patterns as Texas whitetail or even the same travel patterns they have during the summer.

Axis on our lease are free range and impossible to pattern. they just "show up" . always exciting when they do !!!

That the excitement of hunting the rut is still as awesome as ever even after43 years hunting and I am still a sucker for chocolate horns

Should not of taken my scope off this guy the last weekend to look at another buck right at dark went back to the same blind every hunt the rest of weekend and did not return KICKIN MY BUTT !!!!!!!!

What did someone share earlier, a buck in the hand is better than two in the bush? Yours is without question, one of the most common lessons learned in the deer hunting community. Maybe next year.

I learned that I sure feed a lot of good deer all spring and summer only to never see them during the hunting season

I've learned, good things come to those that wait In my case, it took just an extra hour during a single, cold morning hunt when I would have normally left and headed back to the truck.

That almost all my deer went Nocturnal just before gun season.
Therefore I now have a crossbow to hopefully bag my 1st deer with it in 10 months from now.
Guess this kind of contradicts my previous post. But I waited a really long time to get a bow...............

i learned this many many years ago but have gotten lazy these past 10 years, and that is , get out of the box blind, quit staring at a feeder and make it happen.
all year i kept seeing the same deer, cameras showed the same deer, well i got out of the blind and actually hunted, saw more mature deer than i even knew we had, and i scored on a brute. Yep - however I will never disturb known bedding areas. Had a guy on my old lease traipse all over the place including the sanctuary areas and he pushed all of the nice bucks onto neighboring properties.

That prep for next season needs to begin NOW. I got behind this year and kept thinking I'd get everything done, but never did. Yes - mid Jan to mid Feb scouting. Feb/ March repairing blinds/feeders/fences. Come turkey season we work on camp/trailer and stock some wood. Of course this past year work schedules got in everybody's way and we didn't make it out until the heat of summer
