Anyone ever trapped and raised a piglet for butchering?
If so, is it worth it or is it more efficient to buy a domestic piglet for meat?

No reason it wouldn't work, I know folks have done this, not sure how common it is today. I was wondering more about how tame one would get.

If you have the time, the proper place, and the money, it can be done. But not economically! If you've ever raised any kind of "domestic" live stock, you know that you'll have to get quite involved with such a project: keep it clean, fed, watered, healthy (one trip to vet will burn through a lot of cash, real quickly!) and properly penned can use up a lot of your time, to say nothing of all your extra spending money. You don't want to let it "free range" or it will go feral on you, so very tight quarters are required. I would not recommend it. A rifle bullet is a lot better and cheaper way to get yourself some young pork!

At first they are skittish, but as the weeks go by, they like you getting in the pen with them and scratching their ears

Maybe. Glenn Guess has raised several and I know of one that he had that was "iffy" to be around even after a couple of years. But you never know .....

I helped a buddy of mine one time. Don't know what it cost but it ate good.

if you have a GOOD PEN, go for it, don't make the pen to small, penned hogs will use the same spot to defecate every time, feed and water, shade in summer.

I have raised a couple piglets at different times throughout the years. The first had become fairly calm by the time we butchered him at 9 months. He would be waiting at the gate for you at feeding time, but he never became tame enough to pet.

The second one I raised became tamer than most cats I've ever known! I kept her in a pen for the first couple of months. My gf at the time had a lab with a litter of pups around the same age as "Princess". I let her out of the pen one day, and she decided that she was a dog from then on. She only ate dog food, slept and played with the puppies, and even suckled on the lab as they were weaning! It was pretty funny to see her come running around the side of the house with 4 puppies chasing her, and then turn it around and chase them back around the other side! I never saw her away from the house for nearly a year.

The very first time we hadn't seen her around all day, I was driving a buddy around and we jumped up a small herd (6-10) of pigs no more than a couple of miles from the house. The last one in the group stopped ~75 yds from us and my buddy shot it. I'll be damned if it wasn't Princess! I guess she had heard the call of the wild!

Raised several over the years at my place and all were tame enough to pet but all were good eating!Dont know how economical it was to raise but had the land and time to do it.

he did some math with corn and determined not good return of investment

they don't put on weight like the domesticated variety

Thanks for all the great info./ feedback. I have the time and the place, but I want the chops and bacon to be worth it.
If kept in a pen and they STILL don't put on the weight like a domestic pig,
I think I'll forgo all the effort and just spend the $$ on a domestic piglet.

My daughter, 8yrs old wants one as a pet. I asked her if she thinks the City of Frisco would allow that? My son, 11yrs old says "dad forget about the city, you better ask Mom"

My wifes uncle found a piglet at his back door and they kept it like a pet. She passed away last year, but had grown to what I'm guessing was between 350 and 400lbs. She would eat out of your had and loved to have her ears scratched.

My family raised pigs on our farm when I was a teenager.
That was enough for me.
