Anybody ever use a Brittany for duck hunting, I've never seen it, but had somebody ask me about it. So I thought I'd check here.

Hoping to have mine duck hunting by next year. Taking him to school in March when he is 6 months old. We shall see how it goes! He has the drive so far and loves the taste of duck when I have brought them home this season.

My first Brittany Spaniel circa 1965. Lady weighed 35 Lbs and was equally adept at upland birds and retrieving waterfowl. The only problem with this wonderful breed is that they are NOT built for extreme cold water/weather. If she couldn't run while hunting she stayed home.

Don't bath your Brit any more than you have to during duck season. The natural oils in your dog's coat will help in the cold water. If by "taste" your giving your dog some raw duck trimmings, you may want to stop. May or may not cause a problem later.

As a kid my old man raised Brittanies, mainly for quail hunting. But, being on the coast where it wasn't too cold he had a couple of them that were great duck dogs. I can remember Sam retrieving a "sailer" snow that went down a quarter mile away in the rice paddy. Took him 20 minutes, but he came back draggin' that goose backwards by the neck!

That being said, I have a 10 year old Brittany that has never wanted anything to do with dux. I've tried everything and it just isn't in her. She is great for upland... more or less what she is bred to do, but no go on the dux. I joke that she thinks she's too good for 'em.

I meant that I will play fetch with him when I bring ducks home from hunting. I never let him eat them. He likes to run around with them in his mouth. That's what I meant by "taste". Sorry, I should have explained better! Good info to know though!
