I was on highway 16 today about 10 miles south of Commanche. In a large winter wheat field I saw two birds of prey on the ground with a buzzard sitting about 30 yards away. I turned back around because the raptors had light colored heads. I got stopped and got the binoculars on them and it was a pair of cara cara's on a lamb carcass. I couldn't believe it! Isn't that a little far north for cara cara's??

They're all over N. Lee county. Never saw one outside of S. Texas 10 years ago.

We have a few in South Dallas/North Ellis county.. They threw me off the first time I saw them but now the orange on the beak and white wing tips is a dead giveaway..

They don't seem to be as aggressive as the red tail hawks in diving on rabbits, rats, etc.. but they're cool to watch..

Also called a Mexican eagle. I've seen them around our place west of Luckenbach.

Yea we always called them mexican eagles as well. They are very cool birds and love watching them when I hunt south Texas.

I grew up seeing them in Southwest Texas. We called them Mexican Eagles. Last year I saw some between Marlin and Groesbeck in Falls county.

They are beautiful until you see one trying to get one of your kid Ibex. Luckly the mother was near.

We have had two on our place just east of Hico the last couple of years. Now if we can just get some axis to migrate north.

When I was a youngster back in the '50s and '60s, it was rare to see any Mexican eagles on the ranch where I was raised near the Medina/Frio County line. As with most critters, they seem to be expanding their range and moving further north. Now, we have quite a few of them here in Menard County. Same is true with the black headed buzzards, I never saw them as a boy but now, we have more of them than we do the red headed vultures. These black headed birds are much more aggressive and they do not migrate south in the winter as the vulture does.
Adios,
Gary

I see them almost every day in Hill and Limestone counties. Many times they are in small groups of 2-6 birds feeding a dead animal.

I see them frequently as they work over the "bone yard" right outside Voca, near Brady, and occasionally in Mason County.

They are all over the place here in Gonzales. I can't stand them. Nothing but a nuisance predator for everything from pets to young calves to fawns for our whitetail, blackbuck, and axis.
