Any of the calibers you list will be just fine with a good quality hunting bullet. I shoot my Nilgai with a 300 Win mag with 180 grain nosler partition bullets and had no problems. Shot placement is a little forward and low compared to a whitetail. Pretty much put you vertical cross hair on the from legs and go about 1/3 up the body and you have a dead Nilgai when you pull the trigger. You will be quite pleased with the meat quality.

The nilgai hunt I went on the minimum caliber the outfitter required was .300.win and up, they said they preferred .338 win and larger and the guide always did a follow shot.

Any will work. Don't shoot it in the neck. Erny's shot placement is spot on, methinks.

Erny is right about the placement. Get a premium bullet, one that penetrates well. They can be tough to take down. Your 300 with a good 180 gr. or heavier should do the job.

The neck won't break is what's wrong lol. Unless you shoot it in the face/head/upper neck/jaw, in which case you risk ruining your trophy. Nilgai bulls' horns are small but they fight more viciously than things with bigger bone because their necks do the fighting. #neverskipneckday

Wait until the near leg is stepped forward and sneak it in there..i rushed a shot on a nice bull last week and hit too much shoulder and never found him..i was using a 140gr acuubond though. Buddy of mine shot a big bull last month with 30-30 few inches behind shoulder and that worked well avoiding the thicker muscle and bone.

I shot one in the neck on accident with a .300 WSM using 165 grain NP. I was aiming at the shoulder and it moved at the last second, dropped in his tracks.

Good luck. I shot mine with the ranch gun because the owner thought my .338 win was on the small side. His .338 laupua did the job. You just cannot have enough gun on Nilgai. My ears are still ringing! Lol

Not trying to steal your thread but I would like to know what the average shot range is? I love hunting with my 45/70 and have considered booking a hunt.

It's gonna be a short shot about 50 yards there's a few bulls on those game cams all the time just gonna put some alfalfa out for them a week before I get ready for my shot.

Wow at that range my 45/70 loaded with 500 grain rounds will hit like the hammer.

I have shot 4 NILGAI bulls and 2 NILGAI cows. All neck shots with a 30.06. All DRT. I'd say neck shot works just fine.

You should have been here yesterday!

I shot a cow from less than 50yd in between the eyes with a 64gr power point out of a 20" 22-250. Also shot a cow from 90yd in the neck with 150gr fusion.

Both are now fecal matter in x-ocean via my neighborhood's sewage system grin

chital hunts with pop guns.

a .30-06, 7mm or .300 win mag with break a nilgai's neck no/problem

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I would get at least a 50 BMG. If a 223 is not big enough for a WT then any of the 3o Cal. Mags are not big enough for a Nilgai.

We typically do not take any shots over 100 yards. Your 45/70 will do the trick. As far as shot placement, take the gentleman's advice about low in the front shoulder, as low as possible. Only neck shot I would take on a bull is if he's looking at you and you can hit the white spot. A shot closer to the base of the neck is not a high percentage shot. We have had several get up to never be seen again after a neck shot.

What is your recommendation Bull? for a Cow?

My choices are

338 Federal shooting a 210 Partition at 2600 fps
350 Rem Mag shooting 200 TTSX at 2950 fps
9.3x62 shooting 250 Accubond at 2550 fps
