Headin up Friday to set up camp, going to be a cold one. We have a tent with a wood burning stove so the camping will still be good, gonna be shocker stepping out Sunday morning though!!! Really looking forward to getting back to the Matador.

Was a cold one!!! Camped Friday thru Wednesday, saw some deer missed some opportunities and left with out a deer. My buddy got a doe that weighed 93 lbs field dressed. We hunted the Samson pasture. I hiked at least 4 miles a day hunted from sun up to sun down. I explored every valley and revine I had time to. I spent countless hours glassing the hill sides. I have 11 "Loyalty Points" towards a mulie drawand hope my time spent exploring the north and south sides of Samson will pay off. I did learn that there are a lot of Whitetail that will bed in the Mesquite flats along the lower ledge of the cliffs on the north side of the river. I have hunted the Matador several times and have never seen so many Quail, it's great to see the come back!!! I will be taking another trip soon I hope to bird hunt. The coyotes and hogs are out of hand they really need to get them under control. I took a shot at a coyote but the backpack and heavy coat kind of hinderd my freehand shot...I missed a doe at 15 yards the same way...duh me.
I had a great time I am looking forward to doing it again.

SORRY you didn't have any luck filling a tag, SAMH. I WAS FORTUNATE enough to get drawn on the 2nd hunt last season. I hunted SHORTY. I was new to the Matador, and got some good feedback from past hunters on the FORUM. Weather was HOT, and rained early in the am prior to last morning of the hunt. Last morning was actually un`believeable! I hadn't even seen a deer up to then. In a 3 hour period on the last morning, I rattled up (7)- different bucks. A couple were right at the ears, and 5 smaller. Didn't want to take a chance of shooting an illegal buck, so I passed on the 2 bigger ones. I haven' t been on a place where rattling was so effective since I hunted down by Laredo in the 80's! Truly one of the best hunts i've been on in my life! Proves you don't have to tag a deer to have a great time. 2 brothers hunting pasture to my east saw some monster deer, but were also not successful in putting a tag on one. They live in Kerrville. Wishing you a Blessed and Happy New YEAR!
