I love my job. I have a patient who's from the great state of Kansas and I get to go hunt her family farm near Tipton. I'm going to drive 11 hours to hunt one day. If I can get one on those huge roosters it'll be worth it in my opinion. I'll post pics.

Ha yes, I have a few versions of merino wool.

My brother is coming along so we have our little GSP team now. We are on I35 north. Stopped at the Czech stop and grabbed kolachis.

I wear snake boots almost year round here in TX. We are going to stop somewhere and I might get a pair of boots for walking snowy stubble and grass.
Anyone have a recommendation for boots? I brought my Lowa alpines... Mule deer hunting boots. They are more geared for mountains and colder weather. Man they are heavy.
Oh and maybe a store to stop at headed through central OK and KS

Take 35W through Ft. Worth. Cabela's has some kangaroo leather boots that are comfortable and light

If you don't mind getting off the highway a bit, Bad Brad's BBQ in Stillwater has always been good.

Yes we will head to Cabelas. We are in OK now. This country up here is gorgeous. Makes me want to deer hunt.. Or duck hunt. We are seeing geese and ducks on all the tanks. This area must have huge deer. Nice to see a different setting.

We won't make the BBQ on our way in but maybe on our way back.

Here's our fancy dog box. My 15year old niece decorated for us. We stuffed them with hay and closed them up a bit. I was a little worried about the cold.

I had to wear my longhorns hat into the station in OK. They didn't love it

. we stopped in Salina to eat before we reached our destination cause LO says there won't be anything open when we get there.
We chose to eat at Tuscons. I wanted to try Kansas steak. It was just ok. Maybe I need to try again cause the ribeye I ordered was really tough. The local beer was great though.

We got there around 8:45 and almost hit a few monster does on the road. Man the deer there were huge!! Does were close to 200lbs I bet. The guy who farms the place was out of town so we had to go with the LO's wife's input. She sent us to the last harvested field. They leave stubble for the cows later. She told us to wear brush pants cause the cover next to the field is thick. We were half way when we found our first rooster. He ran into the cover and held up. Both dogs were pointing when he came busting out 20 yards ahead on Tonys side. He didn't get far.

I was getting worried when we were getting near the end of the best spot that nothing would be left. We were almost out when up ahead I saw two hen run into this brush near a broken wind mill. I motioned to Tony I saw them up ahead and we silently pulled out dogs in close with the e collars. When we got to the wind mill the dogs were on them and started trailing.
Three hens and a rooster came up on my side as I stepped over a broken tank. I totally blew it. I got on him late cause of the hens and my footing. Tony surprised me when he said he thought I might have hit him and he saw where he flew.
We got the wind right and it was a tree line with huge cotton woods next to another harvested grain field. Tony gave me the choice and I chose to walk in the cover. The rooster came out into the field way up ahead. I never even saw him but I heard Tonys shot and heard a thud. We were so pumped even though it wasn't perfect. The dogs were not quite on his scent when he came outta there. Tony kept saying man prairie storm did a well cause the bird was a long way off.

We spent the next hour driving around looking. We saw the buck of our dream up on a huge bluff. From very far away you could see a huge drop tine on one side. Then we saw a hen pheasant by this creek. We wasted lots of time trying to get across the whole thing was iced over and it was hard to tell how deep it was. Finally we split up and ran each side of the creek. There was so much food in there and lots of cover. The problem was the birds would run up the creek and flush into the field. We missed lots of opportunities before we got smart and hunted the same side. Tony gave me the field side since he had a few birds down. We went a long way before finding a few hens. They actually held and we surrounded them and flushed them. Finally Tonys dog went on point then mine and out came a rooster and I got a clean shot. He folded. I wish I got a better picture but we were far apart and didn't take the time. Here's my first Kansas pheasent.

Then we headed in for lunch. Town was a little haul but we needed water and something to eat. We got in a hurry and just were not prepared. I'm glad we went into town cause the food was awesome. You got to love small town USA. Everyone was so nice to us. We ate like kings and met some farmers who gave us all sort of good info about hunting the area. We headed back feeling good for the remainder of the day which was all we had to hunt.
When we got back we got to meet the farmer and he gave us all the hot spots to hunt. Apparently we only hit one of the good spot and had not hunted the best spot on the whole farm yet. There is a bottom that's planted and the farmer cut rows in it for hunters in the family but only one person had hunted it this season and he said the birds will be there.
Because of the wind and terrain we had to leash the dogs and walk through all sorts of planted fields and hedge rows and stone fences. Man I wish I took a picture it was an adventure getting through we saw fox and deer and quail and geese. When we got the we had over a mile walk of the best the farm had to offer. He warned us the birds were smart in this area and said our dogs wouldn't be able to point them....he was wrong. Every bird we killed was a double point. Tonys dog Lilly point 5birds in a few minutes.

Then we were supposed to get a room in Salina, KS and head home in the morning. I had family holiday obligations and I had to be home by 8pm on New Year's Eve. We were so pumped that we drove into the night all the way back to TX. Our deer lease is in Rule, Tx. We have a 300 acre camp area separate from the deer lease so we got there at 3am and slept in a bit. Then we dropped our dogs together on some Texas quail. We hunted 2hours and found 6 coveys. The dogs were so dialed in. They are both just over a year old and they hunted really well. Our camp area has many head of cattle on it and the cover is sparse. Those quail were running and wouldn't hold well. after the KS pheasant hunt our dogs were very careful. They did bump two coveys at first and then they slowed it down.

Then to end the trip we hit Belles in Abeline on the way home. Man that place is amazing!! It was a perfect was to wrap up quality time with my bro and our dogs. I had a different and much longer trip planned but it all got hijacked when my inlaws bought us tickets to a few holidays shows. I really had to push myself to get to go period. This was my second pheasant hunt and I limited out again. I firmly believe God is smiling down on me when everything comes together like this. Without God I don't think I would have been successful or half the time even have the opportunity to hunt. I publicly give thanks. Thankyou Lord!!
Happy New Year Yall!!
