I am acquiring one of these in Remington 700 with laminate stock. Going to be a gift for a good friend who always takes care of me hunting wise. I am hand loader. Outside of the obvious recoil issues and kind of overkill, any thoughts on this. This rifle has a muzzle break that I am considering removing. Not a fan of all that noise. Would be used on mountain hunts so taking a recoil blow couple times a season doesnt seem to offset all that blast of a break.

Never shot or been around this caliber. Anything is more than I have.

I have helped two friends work up loads for theirs. One has already rebarreled to 300win and the other having a 28 Nosler built to replace

I owned one in a braked Sendero for a while. It is an impressive round. Used the Berger 190 over 96 +/- grains of R25 For 3200 FPS IIRC. Everything I shot with that combo died with authority.

Soon realized that I didn't need to burn almost 100 grains of powder and all the noise to kill deer and sold it.

I had one and it's a beast of a gun. Ballistics are pretty good as well. I put a break on it due to the recoil, which was pretty tough to handle when sighting it in. You are correct the break makes it louder than all get out. It really carries a lot of energy. Ammo is harder to find than say 308 or 270 and the price is pretty expensive. But for big game like elk, moose, bear and even bigger, it's a solid choice.

Is that really the cartridge you want to pursue? If the guy can't handle it then the gift value will likely go to waste. Not assuming anything at all here, but if I was going to give someone a gift of appreciation I would want it to be something they would keep and use with enthusiasm. In all honesty, I wouldn't want it myself (grew out of my macho phase several decades ago).

Thats a very considerate gift for a friend, but would a 300 win mag maybe be a better choice? I am not sure what game will be pursued, but I can shoot 300 Win Mag without too much of a problem from sight in to field use. A friend had a 300 RUM and I put a few rounds through it to confirm zero and it was brutal, of course it does not have a brake on it. Not knocking your choice, just saying there may be other caliber choices that would also work well with less powder.

I have one and truly enjoy the gun. It does have a break but they make ear protection for a reason. Good ballistics and a very accurate gun. Very generous of you. I have not shot it without the break, so no info there.

As far as being macho, my 11 year old niece and 10 year old nephew must be tough son of a guns Both killed their first deer with it and it is the only gun my sister uses because it is what she learned with and feels most comfortable. You should meet her, pretty macho smh

Buying it for a friend, yet thinking about altering it?
I have shot 2 that my buddies have, they do kick, but it isn't like you're going to be busting soda cans for a couple hrs, one bud has a break on his, loud, but you can feel the difference.

I agree with Crash, I'd consider a 300WM, those worked for most of Sniper Chris Kyle's work and may be a little cheaper to shoot.

Also agree with TREX (txshntr) Don't see what being "macho" has to do with it.

My primary hunting rifle is a 300WSM and I love it, no break and gets the job done well on elk.

300wm is about the top limit for me when it comes to recoil. Theres really not much need for magnum rifles in TX unless you compete long range or hunt game larger than whitetail. Even so, I cant see the need for 300 RUM. For me, if I needed/wanted bigger than 300wm Id just step up to a 338 lapua.

Also, I would never hand a magnum, much less an ultra magnum, to a 10yr old. They'll likely learn bad habits instead of fundamentals. Theres a reason they dont teach kids in Hunters Ed or run Appleseed shoots with magnum rifles.

I love my 300WM and never saw the need to burn significantly more powder to gain very little. I shoot the 208 amax atop ~77gr H1000 at about 3000fps and it is a hammer on everything.

While I don't own a .300 UM, I do have a 7mm UM and am very, very happy with it. The unbraked recoil is quite sharp, so I wouldn't remove the brake until the rifle's been shot by the new owner; let him make the call.

Yeah it really has nothing to do with 'handling' it. Guys 6'5" and runs a 7mag now as it is. We hunt in the Davis Mountains out west plenty of elk and Aoudad. Mule deer too. Opportunity for longer range shots. I have the same rifle Rem 700 LSS in 300WM and love it. He has always admired it. Devil of a time finding this particular gun in 300WM. Only made for 2 years in that caliber. The alter part is only removing the removable break and perhaps getting a cap. The amount of times fired would really negate any recoil aspects. He has plenty of other rifles for whitetail. Sounds like a mixed bag of thumbs up or down.

There's a big gap between 7 mag and 300 ultra mag recoil. Whether people admit it or not, the 300 ultra is well over the limit for most. You could always work up some lighter loads if the recoil bothered him or try a different brake. They are all loud but some are better than others. It's just not a very practical round for most of us.

I think TxHunter80 is very correct. Being 6'5" doesn't mean a thing when it comes to recoil, and a 7 Mag is a pussycat. A .300 UM will be a beast without a brake, and obnoxiously loud with one. But that's just how Yours Truly feels about it. Since this thread was originated to solicit opinions, I am hoping this is okay to say.

Recoil is STOUT but an experienced shooter should be able to learn to deal with it. In my opinion the 300 Win Mag is a better choice simply from a ammo availability stand point but the 300RUM is clearly a superior round and don't let anyone try to tell you otherwise. At one point I believe the 300RUM was Remingtons top selling caliber. It wasn't performance that brought it down in sales, it was recoil and cost of ammo.

I took no offense to any post. Surely want the opinions. Hand loader so ammo availability is only limited to me not be able to find the brass (which seems readily available but pricey). I appreciate all versions of this whether thumbs up or down. Just trying to get better understanding. Plus the price of the 300RUM is very good.

I agree that the 300WM would be better. Was certainly my first choice but not finding it in this gun. Kinda sucked into this model as it is the one I have and that my buddy has oohed and aahed over for several years.

Gentry makes a "Quiet Break" where the angles of the ports are tapered a little forward. Supposed to send the report more down range. That's the break I went with.

Saw a yote loping across a wide open wheat field at about 700 yards while I was out walking around one time. Just for grins I leaned up against the fence post to see if I could get close with the RUM. Almost took his nose off with the first shot and that got him running. I let 3 more go as he was crossing that field. I didn't put my hearing protection on before I started which was a big mistake. Lost hearing in my left ear that slowly came back a few weeks later. Now my left ear is much worse than my right... It really sucks!

Does your buddy have another rifle near that level of power? If not, I would avoid it. Those things are cannons. Serious risk of it not being used much.

I think the round itself is probably good for any long distance shooting, just not for me as I don't care for brakes on my rifles like others have on theirs. Of course I am not setting my rifles up for kids either. I like my 300 win mag for most general purpose shooting and its not at all unpleasant, no brake needed. If I need something bigger I move up to 338 win mag or 416 rem mag dependent on my situation. It seems like a lot of powder burn for what it brings to the table. I guess the biggest question is what does your friend hunt the most? Is the rum needed or is there a better fit for the game hunted?

This would be used in the mountains. Elk, Aoudad, mule deer. Long range cracks at feral hogs. I am not a fan of brakes either. I hate loud. Rather absorb the recoil. Ideally would have liked to find this rifle in 300WM as that is what I have for the same hunts. But its a ghost. IS RUM needed...no. Got great deal lined up on it is other factor.

I shoot a custom Wiseman .300RUM and love it. While yes, it is overkill for whitetail, I wanted a gun I could take elk hunting, caribou, bear hunting, just about anything I could ever see myself wanting to pursue. Bill's brake makes it kick just a tad harder than my .270. Downside? yah, its loud as crap...but we should all be using hearing protection as I see it. I dont have to hand load, either, it stacks 180gr remmy's just fine out of the box...a testament to his barrels. I find myself shooting my .270 on deer nowadays, mainly bc I typically have my boys in the blind with me. But boy, do I love drilling hogs with it. so much fun.

I can't think of anything I would want one for. A .300 WM or even .338 WM will get the same job done without all the unnecessary drama. They were a fad for awhile but the novelty has largely worn off.....
