On a whim I picked up a NEF in 22 Hornet. Gonna need to replace the rings and scope. I have no particular use for a hornet that I know of other than a range gun but looking forward to seeing what it can do at moderate ranges. Any recommendations on scope and factory ammo is appreciated. Will reload if it proves to be a shooter.

I would put a leupold 1x4 on it. Cheaper than dirt had a sale on seller and belliot in 22 hornet. Fun round, I have my great grandfathers savage that caliber. I've taken several hogs with it.

A 35 grain VMax (the Hornet bullet) and 13.0 grains of Lil Gun is about as good as it gets. I'd also suggest that you use small PISTOL primers instead of rifle primers. The cartridge headspaces off the rim, and that makes it a bit difficult in the accuracy department. Although there are a few rifles out there that will shoot MOA or better, I have a Ruger 77 and they are definitely not the best Hornet rifle that has been built. Here is the VMax that I shoot: http://www.hornady.com/store/22-Cal-.224-35-gr-V-MAX/And as you can see, the BC is non-existent. But it's a Hornet, and "it is what it is". I have shot 1 deer with mine (just for the heck of it) and it went about 20 feet before going down. Deer rifle? Maybe. But obviously not my first choice. Definitely a great truck gun and will turn coyotes inside out. I wouldn't even attempt anything over 200 yards and that's "iffy". And nothing bigger than a coyote at that range. As for a scope, I'd use a bit more magnification. Mine wears a 4-12 and it is great.

I have some factory Vmax 35s. I've heard nothing but good concerning lil gun and any where from 12-13 grains. A pound of powder should last for a while. Just need dies and Ima gonna start loading. Think I'll stay with Vortex and get a diamond back or crossfire in 4x12. Although I do have thoughts of using my AR's Leupold for this weekend.

Big Daddy, the wonderful thing about Lil Gun is that you can fill the case all the way to the top and still not be over pressure.

I have a Ruger 77/22 Hornet and it is great for shooting turkeys, prairie dogs, rabbits and, the likes. I even killed a Spike Axis buck with it.
You will enjoy it.

Will reload if it proves to be a shooter. ive literally killed a couple tons of deer and hogs with a hornet, i had an nef and it shot great, i eventualy gave it to a friend and now use a rugger 77, as far as factory ammo the best you will find is winchester 46 gr, and handloading go with a 13 gr of lil gun and small pistol primers, the nef has a 1 in 9 twist so 55 gr bullets are no problem and you can seat close to the lands without worrying about fitting a magazine

My father loved his little 22 hornet...I had a CZ but hated I had to mount the scope so high...now have a encore in a 22 TCM...kind of a modern 22 hornet...

Update. Re-scoped with a Vortex 3x9. Didnt like the factory S&B. Pip squeak of a load for sure. The hornady vmax 30 grains were a little better.
Thanks to forum member Mikei for hornet dies, brass and load data I was able to find something I like.
Hornady vmax in 40 grains with a case full of lil gun is a hot little round. Was able to get 1 moaish on a windy day and much better at 50.

its a little saucier than a 22mag and lesser than a 222 or 223. it will definitely kill with well placed shots.

My prairie dog hunting pard has one. We developed a load for it, plum full of Lil' Gun, and still didn't make much velocity. It had trouble beyond 200 yards. Now he shoots a .223
But depending on what you want it to do, it may be the perfect tool for the job.

Yea Im thinking its closer to a 22 mag than 223 but its still pretty hot.
Almost everything I've ever killed has been in bow range so I'm not a long ranger kinda shooter except at the range.

The Hornet is at its best inside 200 yards where it is a good killer of critters up to coyote sized critters. I have killed critters up to deer sized critters with it but that is not where it excels.
If reloading Lil-gun and small pistol primers are the ticket. I have also used H110 and IMR 4227 but Lil-gun gets about 100fps more with decent accuracy in my Hornets.
