The split re-opener wasn't exactly the barrel burner we thought we'd have when looking at all our ducks earlier in the week pre-front. We literally lost 50K+/- ducks mid-late week when the front blew through. However, all the ducks we lost were replaced with geese. We have a full moon on Wed and we're expecting more birds to be arriving over the next couple days as the freeze line continues to move south. Looking at the weather and if everything unfolds the way they are predicting, the next couple of weeks could really be epic!

All our day duck hunts went really well except for one, even though we had to grind and hunt longer than we expected. But that's what happens when you're coming up on a full moon and the birds can feed at night. The pintails really didn't start showing up till around 9am, but once they did they put on a show!

The club duck hunts were feast or famine. Some groups saw tons of birds but just couldn't get them to work. Ponds that were holding the world earlier in the week had dropped down to just a couple hundred by the weekend. Water, food & location isn't the issue, it won't be long and these ponds will be loaded back up and barrel burners will soon follow. Groups that threw monster spreads and waited them out seemed to have the best hunts.

The goose numbers are flat out remarkable right now. We have multiple farms holding large concentrations of geese. The specklebellies have been easy to come by and usually put on an amazing whiffling show in the process. The snows have been playing a little harder to get, but we expect that to change any day now. We only hunt geese in a goose spread and shoot decoying birds as you can see from the videos we post.

We don't have many openings left in December, but I'll list them below and January is starting to fill up as well.

The last week plus leading up to Christmas was about as solid as we could have asked for! Both our duck and goose hunts have been really solid across the board with only a couple not living up to our expectations. The geese have really moved in with a force as we have feeds on multiple properties. Shooting specks has been pretty easy and some days the snows want to play, but for the most part they haven't wanted to give up just yet. Sooner or later they will and things are going to get western once that happens! Biggest keys for successful on our duck hunts have been setting up where they want to be, giving them the proper rest between hunts and making the most of every opportunity. Pintails and teal are making up the majority of the straps with gadwall, redheads, bluebills and spoonies joining as well.
We have a couple openings remaining between Christmas and the New Year and January is starting to fill up. Will list opening below for those interested in booking a hunt.

Upcoming availability looks like this, on some of these listed dates it will only take one hunt and 2-3 dates will no longer be available, so don't procrastinate if you're wanting to book a hunt.

Being on the "X" in the fog makes all the difference in the world! Had three great shoots this morning including one goose hunt that turned into a crane beat down. Still have some openings this Fri-Sun for anyone interested.

Dec 31st is now booked. Still have goose hunt available Fri Dec 30th and Duck or Goose hunt available Jan 1st.

I've been trying all season to talk enough people into going on a sandhill hunt I just need one more person to get the four person minimum maybe next year I'll be able to get enough people.
When is the best time of year to go for them?

Pretty solid morning highlighted by one of our groups shooting 2 banded specks! Even more geese seem to have found there way to the Texas Coastal Prairie thanks to this last front. Everywhere we are finding geese there are also good herds of pintails. We have room this Sun(1st) for anyone interested in hunting geese. We currently have 5+ goose feeds on our properties, and only a couple goose hunts booked over the next couple days.

Goose hunts are $225 per person and we hunt in the decoys.

Yesterday's scouting was a success. Didn't find birds on every pond, but did find them building on a good number of them, both club and day hunt. The geese are still moving in and this last influx has a BUNCH of young birds in it! Conditions were finally right for us to burn off a couple ponds in preparation for next season.

Below are a few pictures from this weeks hunts and scouting videos. The club has had some good shoots including one that looks like it came from north Texas or Oklahoma and one with a banded speck.

For anyone interested in hunting, we still have openings this weekend for duck hunts and next week for goose hunts.

Interesting but productive weekend for both our guided and club hunts!

Breaking ice isn't something we're accustom to on the Texas coastal prairie, but that's exactly what we were doing this weekend. We had some GREAT shoots as you can see from the pictures. A couple hunts didn't go as well as we thought as the birds just rafted up on the roost in open water and didn't want to move. Might have been because when they did try and go anywhere and land they were sliding 20 yards on hard ice. They did move this afternoon once things thawed out and were buzzing around everywhere and it's very obvious new ducks have arrived.

Not going to hear any complaints from us as A LOT of birds(pintails and greenwings) have shown up over the last week thanks to the cold weather and full moon. Bunch of young snow geese have found there way to a couple of our properties as well. Should make for some great Ecaller hunts if they stick around!

We have some availability this week for both duck and goose hunts for anyone wanting in on the action.

Over the last 8-10 days we've experienced just about every type of weather possible for Texas in January.  Coming off breaking ice two weeks ago; we were back in shorts, wading boots & sweating; 2-5" of rain; gale force winds; backside of the full moon; ground fog; sea fog; and now we're cooling off again.  If you're going to be successful waterfowl hunting in Texas you better be able to adapt to ever changing weather and ready for just about anything! 

Over this time period we have had some really good hunts; we have also had a couple that make us want to pull our hair out.  Scouting would be an understatement for the amount of miles our guides have been covering on a daily basis.  Holding birds late season is just half the battle, getting them in the hole is what separates the men from the boys. 

We closed out crane season with an EPIC feet down beat down over the decoys!  Not much rivals decoying sandhills, but you add the geese doing it right as well late season and that'll upgrade any hunt.  We have had some really quality duck shoots over the last week, including a good number of birds heading to the taxidermist.  Sometimes the final tally/straps don't tell the entire story of a hunt as much as the empty hulls laying around. 
With cooler temperatures forecasted over the next week+/-, the snow geese should stick around into Ecaller season.  We have also had a big influx of greenwing teal which should help us close out this last week/weekend of duck season with a bang.
