On a day when everything is looking good it can turn in a hurry. Frank had just got his second win of the fall season at the Arkansas Derby Classic a little over a week ago. 45 min heats with a big race and a broke covey find out front. When released from his point he looked to be favoring his rear leg. Virgil Moore whoa'd him and checked his pads found nothing and turned him out. He finished the last 4 min. strong but on the way back to the dog wagon he carried the leg.

For those who have lost a good one, and most of us have, you know how I feel today. Sometimes you ask questions you really don't want the answer too. This was one of them. Got two vets to look at Franks xrays and the consensus is hip dysplasia or at best degenerative bone disease. Not really a fix that would allow him to be as athletic as he needs to be. Even with a complete hip replacement he would be at risk running hard in rough country. I won't use him at stud now so it's a pretty sad day.

I saw great potential in him as did Virgil and we both are kind of stunned. I may be able to keep him on pain meds and let him bird hunt sparingly but not even sure I want to put him through that. So I guess Frank is retired and will have a place in my kennel. It's going to hurt for awhile seeing him and thinking about what he loved to do but can't now. Tough day.

Dang, I hate to hear that. He's such a beautiful dog. I've never heard of hip dysplasia in a pointer. My friend with the red setters got it diagnosed in his youngest dog. The medications seem to be working for him.

A lady in NSTRA had a britt that ran without a hip joint, but that's a whole different game.

I hate to hear that, for you and him.

When will you know what it really is? I've had a couple of hip problems over the years and the pointers got better.

Dangit Chet. Sorry to hear that Buddy. Frank sounded like one of those you get every once in a blue moon.

Sorry to hear, very disappointing news. However, it probably wouldn't hurt to get a second opponion and try to stay optimistic about the situation.

It's certainly bad news Chet but I think maybe not the end of the dog's useful life. If you want a second opinion I know a vet who has experience with hip issues. He operated on a dog for me that was down and got him going. PM if interested.

It's not over yet. Hang him up for a while and look into stem cell injection. It's not cheap but it works miracles. I see people with degenerative issues recover miraculously with stem cell all the time.

Check this out.

You can't stud a dog out that has hip dysplasia.

Bill is right, it's a matter of trust with breeders that you don't use a dog carrying a hereditary trait like dysplasia. I trying to get a few more opinions as to whether it's dysplasia or degenerative bone disease so I can make that decision. At this point I don't know if the latter is hereditary or not. It is in some cases a result of a malformed hip joint but can be caused by excessive exercise or trauma (arthritic) .

Chet, years ago I traded a skinny little pointer pup for a two year old lab that had developed a bad case of hip displacia. She could hardly get around. An old area vet gave her a shot of adequine, and another about a week and a half later, and put her on a daily regimine of Synovi MSM. The adequine was to give her relief until the MSM kicked in. I later found the MSM (human supplement)at Sams Club worked just as well, and as long as I kept giving her two pill daily, she was a fireball! Apparently, it works by thickening up the fluid in the joints.
The only time she ever faultered in the next 10years, was because I began to believe she didn't need it, and let her run out. At that time, we had to give her the adequine again.

Noone who saw her would believe she had any type problem at all until cancer took her down at the age of 12.
She made every step I did on multiple dropped bird hunts a week, all season long, and retrieved all downed birds at a dead run. She always hopped up and off my flatbed truck by herself and was a regular little fireball.

No, he is not going to be a stud dog, but his hunting days may be FAR from over.

Oh man, I hate to hear it. It's tough to know he can no longer really do what he's been trained and bred for.

We all need to practice Whoa more.

Pointer, I purchased a regiment that does what you talked about. Will treat pain, increase natural fluids in the joint and aid regrowth of cartilage. May work may not but giving it a try. Hope I get the results you did.
