I got a trip up to the Dakotas coming up this coming January. I was thinking about getting some tire chains for my 4x4 tundra. Anyone have any experience with tire chains? I looked online and the chooses are overwhelming.

My two cents on the matter:

Off road I run the V Bar version, if you are thinking you are going to have to abide to the Chain Law on the highway either twisted link or cable should suffice.

Key is to get the chain tight you will need a set of chain tighteners. If you get this wrong the chain will come off and it very rarely comes off the outside of the tire. Always seems to come off on the inside and wraps itself around brake lines etc. If you do not pay attention you can tear things loose, if you think a chain is loose stop and check it.

Do not wait to be laying in 18 inches of snow trying to figure out how in the heck they go on and how to get them tight. Practice putting them on here. If you get stuck before putting chains on you are going to need a handyman jack to get them on easily/er.

One last tip the hook goes on the inside and the clasp on the outside.

IMO most of what you are going to find in Dakotas will be handled with good tires and careful driving. If you are going to be running into the hinterland get 4 good sets of chains, 6 tighteners (they break and get lost) handyman jack and a snow shovel. PM me if you want more info on my kit for winter driving in places where no one else might be along for days.

Have a safe trip.

When they come loose they will also tear the heck out of your fenders. If you can not get them tight enough let the air out of your tires, install chains as tight as you can get then and them air the tires back up.

Thank You

whatever you buy, be sure you try them out before you need them ... spoken from experience while going to CO hunting one year in my FIL truck with chains he brought (4-5 sets, none fit his truck).

Also take some bungie cords and use them to keep the chains tight on the outside.
