Didn't even come close to breaking my heart. I lost a doe once and have found several dead bucks shot/lost by others, not exactly fun times that's for sure.

Guy that made that shot is probably on here lecturing about bullet placement.

If you wanted to take the rack, would that cost you a tag?

It is a shame for a good deer like that to go unfound. What started as pleasant memories turned into a nightmare that will be rehashed for years to come. We all have our memories, some pleasant and some not so pleasant.

If you wanted to take the rack, would that cost you a tag? Without notifying the GW first, I would think you could get in a bit of a bind if it's in your possession without a tag.

Uh, where on there did they say 100% that the deer was shot. 'I imagine it was gut shot and wandered over here to die'. Deer die for a lot of reasons.

Saddest one for me was when I was about 18 or 19, we were on a lease in San Saba county with my dads boss and his son (and others, I think we had 8 members) dads boss never really hunted, just let his son do all the shooting. Well, they were bad about not going to look after taking a shot if the animal ran off, they just figured they didn't hit it (I found a doe laying right where he said it was when he shot but he was sure he missed). They were the only two to make it down on the last weekend of this particular season, sure enough, come back saying son shot at a nice buck and missed, I told dad, I guaranty you that deer is laying out there. Heres the sad part, the kid was in a terrible car accident and killed shortly after the season was over. (he was 16) Fast forward to mid summer when dad and I go down to check on things and sure enough, about 50 yards behind the feeder on the biggest trail going to & from feeder, laid that buck. About a 130 class buck.
Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

I guess maybe it's a sign I've been hunting way too many years and have seen maybe too many dead deer, but as others have mentioned, deer die from other things in the wild besides arrows and bullets. Now if you were to start finding more than one, or a couple over a short period of time in a small general area, then I would say there is a problem with other hunters. It happens, for whatever reason, and in most cases it is out of your or my control unless you see a pattern, and then it may have to be reported to the GW, but even then it's something that may be hard to prove as intentional, in which case the GW could possibly do something about it.

Thursday at 12:45 PM #33 Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.
