I got a new can and want to check alignment on 2 rifles. So I need to use it for about 5 mins and really don't want to spend $75 on a new one.
Thanks,

Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

Never heard of one. You could maybe try a wood dowel.
It is far more important to be able to hit the target than it is to haggle over who makes a weapon or who pulls a trigger.

Are you afraid the threads aren't square?

I have a Suppressor coming one day (April order) for my M&P 10. I've never heard of this alignment rod thing before. Is this something common you need to do with a new suppressor?

It's just an easy way to make sure everything is lined up before you load and hit the bang switch. If you have a muzzle device that the suppressor connects to it's way to give you a little piece of mind that you're not at risk for a baffle strike. Take a look at this link, has a good pic of how it works. https://geissele.com/17-7-62mm-suppressor-alignment-gage.html

Install can. Remove bolt. Look down barrel from breech end. looks good? Go shoot. That is the system I use. I don't like putting steel things in my precision barrels, especially near the crown. Not being a jerk, just the way I see it.

I appreciate your post, now I'm kinda freaked out about my new Harvester on my 308.

I always just look through the bore on every firearm that uses a suppressor. Never had a baffle strike yet!

The problem i have is that I don't trust my eyes with a $1000 investment. I might just buy one anyway so I have one on hand to check my rifles.

Never had a problem with alignment. If you get a barrel threaded make sure it's a reputable smith.
Wether it's a factory threading or threaded by a smith all I've ever done is pull the bolt and make sure all looks good.

Never used a rod before and probably never will. Never looked down the bore to check either. Guess I just trust the quality of equipment I buy.
