Anyone else seen this? Over the years I've had a couple of real nice mature bucks we were after, but around Oct 1st they would disappear. With help from a neighbor a few miles from me, we found out they would spend rut there. Not many deer and very few mature bucks on his property.
These bucks are leaving lots of food and Does to avoid a fight I think. They would always show back up sometime in Jan.
I think when folks see big bucks and they disappear for season, I think this could be the answer,,Wimp Bucks that don't want to fight. Just a thought..

Wimp or smart? Does your friend not have does?

We have some bucks that disappear every year and some that suddenly appear. I think they just move around and for whatever reason some go here some there. It got them to maturity so they keep it up.

I have killed several post-mature bucks during the rut that weren't participating in the activities at all. I've always believed that some older, mature bucks opt out of rutting activities in favor of longevity. But yes, on free range properties does have their core areas and bucks have theirs, most of which do not overlap. These areas change, especially for the bucks, when the rut kicks in. So you could have an area devoid of bucks one week and crawling with them in a few weeks.

Either that, or your bucks bred all your does and went to the neighbors to clean up his roflmao

IMO I think it is more of to many dominant bucks in one spot that causes them to move out to an area where they now become dominant. I have seen it here on my place with bucks leaving in early November only to have them return in mid to late January. I have seen it in all age classes with more in the middle age class range leaving. It is getting to be more apparent now with the number of mature bucks in the older age class I have. I still have deer move in but many are here for one or two days and gone with the dominant bucks running them off. Some of the mature ones and younger bucks stay longer though. IME it seems like the more feed stations, food plots, etc you have the less of an issue it tends to be.

stx, have you ever killed older bucks that showed no signs of rutting activity? No stains on the hocks, no battle scars, excellent body condition toward the end of the rut?

Yes, but he was very old and more concerned with eating and from being a coyotes last meal than anything else at that point. He was the oldest buck I have ever killed. He was the buck on the right in the euro mount pic. The other buck was killed about 3 miles south of where I killed him in the same season. The other buck was a 7 yr old and dressed 160+. The really old buck dressed either 74 or 78 lbs and scored the other. That was all the teeth he had left when I pulled the jaw out and kept it with the exception to the right front tooth on the right side. I really don't know how old he was at this point since I had no previous history on him.

I agree too, I would call that wimp bucks. Ones that don't want to stick around and fight other mature bucks. Which was the case here.

Or avoiding conflict because they know they aren't the dominant buck in the area

Changes in travel patterns are often dictated by changes in the availability of natural browse. The same buck you've been watching all summer, will seem to disappear only because he has moved to another area with lots of acorns. Also, with so many doe coming into estrus at the same time and being receptive to breeding so briefly, even the lesser bucks are able to get into the action since the big boys can't be everywhere at once.

Yes, when it comes to deer movement, acorns rule!

I guess would be a wimp buck! I am 0-10-1 in fights and would rather be a lover that a fighter.

Wimpy and alive is better than macho and dead. They are just doing what it takes to survive.
