I was out working around the place, cleaning up some of the residue left by The Thundering Herd that invaded us for Thanksgiving. Looked out across one of our pastures and spotted this little feller rooting around one of the oak trees. I had my Savage .243 Winchester with me, so, using a door of the Jeep as a rest, I squeezed off a nice 95 grain Nosler BT. He dropped immediately but because of the high grass, I couldn't tell if he was down for the count or not, so I chambered another round and got ready to throw another one his way. After several minutes with no movement, I got back in the Jeep and moved in closer. He was dead still, so I hopped out, chambered a round in my PMR 30, and began walking around him. Sure enough, when I got upwind from him, he began kicking and struggling to get to his feet. 3 quick 22 Mags to the head convinced him that staying down was a better idea. When I examined him, I found that my Nosler hit him a bit high on the neck, so it was my bad that he didn't die immediately. Placement, placement, placement, right, boys and girls?

You stunned him and got to him in time before he got up and ran away. Sounds quite reasonable. A bit high on the neck is often just some muscle. Sometimes, it doesn't even stun them.
GOOD JOB on making it successful!

GOOD JOB on making it successful! Yeah, DoubleNaught, the bullet took a very large chunk out of his neck and must have just knocked him out for a little while, and he was coming to just about the time I walked up on him. I normally carry my Judge with a few Long Colts in the cylinder but I wasn't expecting to see a hog. The only reason I had the .243 with me was because there are a couple of cull bucks that tend to wander around in the middle of the day. . .

Nice going. I always carry a .22 pistol with me for those occasions a finishing shot is required. Congratulations on taking out another hog. Keep after 'em! --

Happens often with 'high' shots to the neck or the area over the shoulder where the Dorsal Spines of the Vertebrae are present. Hit one of those...and it will often knock the hog down (and out) for a short period of time. The hog soon recovers, jumps up and runs off...leading folks to believe they are tougher animals than they really are. Glad that you got him, good job!

SnakeWrangler, I hate to admit it, but I was shooting for his earhole, but at 100+ yards, poor rest, lots of weeds, old age and bad marksmanship all played into the bad shot placement! I had it all working for me this morning!!

Edit: was not meant as a criticism in any way....just commenting on shot placement.....ear hole or straight above the front leg 1/3 up on the body.....
