That was my only other sub-$300 option. What is it about huge grips that makes stocks cheaper to build? Or do only gorilla-handed people buy cheap stocks?

How many range sessions have you had so far with it? What are you seeing?

Yes. The CTR bottom metal and trg magazine is great too.

1 so far. More ammo coming in mail on Wednesday. First range trip was mediocre. 60 rounds of grips in the 2"-3" range with some around 4". Finally got some 1" groups at the end. Replaced trigger spring afterwards and hoping for better results next time out with some new ammo.

Thanks!

Will the mags definitely work with 223? Or do I need to make sure and get mags for a certain caliber? Does that magazine eliminate the issues with using ammo with heavier bullets that are too long for the Tikka factory mag?

You should go through a few more range sessions before replacing anything. CTR mags are for 308 win and 260 Rem and they cost $150 a piece.

2-3" groups and some 4"? It took 5 rounds to have mine zeroed and touched holes after that. I find it hard to believe it shot 2-4" groups. If so it's not the gun I can assure you. I find it even harder to believe it went from 2-4" groups to 1" groups because you put 60 rounds through it. Interesting.

I adjusted my trigger as low as it would go, I don't have a trigger scale but would guess it's around 3lbs and crisp.

Trg22 magazine designed for 308. For it to hold the 223 you'd have to bend the feed lips

Sorry to break it to you. I've got pictures of lots of <.5" groups at 100 yards with my savage 308 and <.3" groups at 50 yards with an Anschutz 22. If the gun can handle it, I can produce some good groups. Not always consistently, but I can do it.

The trigger was really heavy from the factory and was already adjusted as light as it would go. Groups should improve with a better trigger spring that I put on. I would estimate new pull at 1.5-2 lbs.

I'm sorry if my story sounds implausible. I said I was having an off-day, so some of those shots could have been me. Also could have been a scope problem. POI was jumping randomly it seemed like.

Another part of the problem was that I could have been shooting too fast with the barrel too hot. Been awhile since I had a rifle I had to slow down for.

I've always known that I wanted to move to a vertical grip stock. Not switching due to performance. Just switching due to personal preference. I think a CTR or Tactical take-off stock would do the trick.

I don't know how much you saved buying the T3 over the T3X but it wasn't worth it if you didn't like the stock and wanted a vertical grip. The T3X has a modular stock and a vertically grip is $22.

http://www.berettausa.com/en-us/t3x-vertical-pistol-grip-t3x-pistol-grip/s54067116/

On the trigger being heavy, mine was a little heavy on a recent CTR. I backed it off a little to probably to 3.5 lbs.

No real difference in accuracy between the 55 grain hornady match steel or the 68 grain hornady match ammo. Will have 75 grain match steel in next time I go out, so I'll try all 3 against one another. Stock and trigger were comfortable. Scope was great. Need a stock pack, but I'll work that into the birthday list. Hoping for sub-MOA groups next time out.
just curious, are you letting the barrel cool after 3-5 rounds?

I think that played a part in the bad groups. I definitely slowed down towards the end and started getting better results. I'll have a better report after I get my 75 grain ammo and take it back out to the range again (hopefully this weekend).

On this topic though - how long do you usually let it cool? Or how do you tell if it's "cool enough" or not?

Got it for $440. Don't think a T3x can be had anywhere near that. Found a CTR take-off stock on snipers hide that I might pick up.

But as for the $22 vertical grip for the T3x, that's awesome! That's a big improvement for sure. What is the lowest price you've seen a T3x Lite for?

Patriot,

I don't know about the T3X because I've never shopped them. My CTR was more of an impulse buy at Cabelas with $100 off and $160 in Cabela dollars.

With regard to the barrel.

A lot depends on the barrel thickness and the outside temp. Light barrels heat up faster. I try to take 60 seconds between shots with the bolt open between shots to cool the barrel. Once the barrel gets hot to the touch, it's good to let it cool for 15 minutes.

I have a Kimber and Savage Lightweight and they have pencil barrels so i really need to watch them closely or they will start stringing.

As a general rule, I always bring 2 rifles to the range and switch off to keep the barrels from heating up too much.

This T3 Lite is definitely a thin barrel. I'll slow down next time and give it at least 30 seconds between shots.

When I am doing load workup, I normally shoot 3 rounds about a minute apart and then let the barrel cool for 10 to 15 minutes, depending on how warm the barrel gets, before I shoot the next group.

On thin barrels, I'll shoot 3, maybe four, as quickly as I please. Then let it cool.

One trick of the trade to speed up the cool down process is to keep a chamois in a cooler of ice water. After the shot string, wring it out and lay it over the barrel, ran all the way up to the action, for about 5 minutes, it'll help soak up the heat. Remove it, place it back in the cooler and go again.

And don't let anyone tell you it'll crack or otherwise damage the steel. You cannot get it hot enough to do that, and your not quinching it in a tub of water.

Thanks Scott, Jason, and GLC.

Just going to post a stock update in case anyone is reading this thread in the future looking for the same info I am:

Talked with Beretta. The CTR magazine cannot be modified to fit a 223 since it's too small. However, my T3 action will drop right into a T3x stock. So my best bet is going to be waiting for a T3x Lite take-off stock which probably won't cost much and then buying the $22 pistol grip for it. Seems like a win-win - I have a path forward that's affordable, it uses my existing action and magazine, and I don't have to spend money now.

THIS ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^^ ^

we have two T3 Lites and they don't string shots. We generally either switch rifles or let the one we're using cool for 15-20 minutes between groups. It's frustrating to wait, but you're wasting time unless you do.

15-20 minutes? Maybe that was my problem. My Savage 308 was a heavy barrel and you didn't really have to wait much to keep it from heating up. I guess I need to be more patient with this Tikka. Jason told me to get the Varmint, but I couldn't afford the $400 extra. In the long run, it might have been cheaper...

You haven't steered me wrong before. My Savage was a good shooter, but I just got tired of feeding it expensive 308 factory match ammo.

So if I'm looking at somewhere between 5 and 15 minutes between 3-4 shot strings with the light barrel, what type of strings could I do with the heavy barrel?

Good news is that I paid $440 for the T3 lite and can probably get my money back out of it or at least come close to breaking even.

Several months back there was a post about using a 12 volt fan to blow air through a PCV pipe covering the barrel. Seemed promising especially on hotter days.
