Ive read plenty about people being weary about steel shot through the older barrels and the damage that can be caused. Would you feel comfortable running steel through a 1982 model 1100 with a fixed improved cylinder choke? Keep in mind, this is not a cheap shotgun to me. I plan on buying somethin else for steel but might have the opportunity to hunt before that happens.

I think you would be fine with a gun that (relatively) new. But a quick call or email to Remington would ease your mind.

No problem at all. The biggest problem comes from shooting steel thru anything tighter than a mod choke.

I've run many caseloads of steel through a '74 fixed-Full Choke 30" 1100. What ill effects are you guys worried about?

I thought Remington said anything 1963 and newer was steel safe?

Mine is from 1978 and I've shot steel through the fixed mod barrel. However, I now have a new barrel for it with the rem chokes and a turkey choke.

I've never understood the fear of steel shot unless somebody can explain to me how the steel could possible make contact with the barrel while encased in a full length plastic wad. Since it's pushed by the wad there's no way it can get ahead of it until it leaves the barrel.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

Steel shot uses a harder wad and higher pressures than lead shot uses. In older shotguns, the higher pressure can cause ring bulging in the chamber and the harder wad can open up a tight choke in a barrel that was not made for it. The higher pressure should not be a problem for modern US made shotguns since it falls within SAAMI lead shot standard pressures. There might be an issue for English shotguns. Also, all manufacturers will say there is no reason to use more than a modified choke with steel shot since there is no pattern advantage.

I thought most plastic wads had open slits running length wise which could allow some size shot to make contact with the barrel especially at the choke area.

I am also under the impression most steel shot is coming from China and is extremely hard as opposed to a softer steel shot, so where lead used to deform this hard steel shot attacks the barrel.

What shotgun manufacturer wants to admit they might have ever used a weaker or softer or substandard steel in their barrels?? JMHO 2cents

Its not the steel shot damaging the barrel. It's the full choke restriction and nowhere for steel shot to go when it passes through the choke. I believe Ramball36 has personal experience with that. I believe it was him that posted that pic a few years ago on here. If I'm wrong, I'm sure he'll be along to set me straight shortly. grin
