A couple of friends and I have purchased 195 acres a few miles north of Abilene and will spend the next year getting up some 5' 4" mesh fence with a couple strands of barbed wire on top. We want to keep some exotics like sika and fallow. We have discussed blacbuck but my concern is that they aren't the most hardy critters when it comes to cold weather. What say the experts about having them that far north?

Blackbuck would do fine. But you'll need a taller fence to keep sika and fallow on the place.

I run them north of Santo in Palo Pinto County (high elevation) as long as they have cover to get out of the Wind and during freezing Rain they will do good, a few Years ago we had temps in the teens with Snow, Ice and freezing Rain, I rolled out a Round Bale so they could not only eat but Bed on the Hay, it socked in for several Days, every couple of Days I would roll the Bale out a little more, my only concern would be if you're not around during one of those Storms and don't have good cover (Trees, Canyons etc.)

We have trees but no dense thickets. However we have a bunch of scrub oak cover and we could get round bales to them. I think they are nice to have around. The lease I'm on has some and I enjoy seeing them.

Both breeds are notorious fighters and if they can't go over they can and will go through.

But if there's any reason they do want on the other side, you're gonna have a holey fence. I got rid of my fallow because my mature bucks were kicking a two year olds butt. He tore 8 or 10 holes in my fence in 2 weeks getting away and getting back in before I could kill him.

I have friends who have been raising them for the past 10 years in Colorado... They have a lean shack that they can get in out of the wind and they seldom lose a BB to the cold... Plenty of feed and shelter and they are doing fine even that far North...

Congrats on the acquired property I can't contribute to the BB conversation, but I'll ask why don't you put axis on the place?

I agree with most everyone else. Black will do fine as long as they have cover. They tend to have issues with he cold only when here is lots of rain and no where to escape the wind. Other than that they are good. With the other exotic species they can have issues with escaping if pressured. While y may not like to jump fence of hunters or predators push them they will escape.

My advice on far as the temps go, put out alfalfa hay and round coastal bales. They will bed down behind them for a wind block and use the edges as warm bedding. As far as the height of the fence, to me it doesn't make much sense to go through the effort and same time it does to do a high fence unless your just against HF. But I understand that's your choice. As long as you keep your animals well fed before the cold gets there they should have a good chance of handling the cold.

I have more trouble with coyotes than cold on raising them.

I'm not against HF. But I went in on this with two friends and one of them is big on the whitetail being able to come and go. I want to HF because I can hunt whitetail anywhere but I like exotics and would love to have Axis on the place. We will be able to upgrade the fence. I understand this is a project situation. From the advice here we have decided that we will try BB. But even that is a year away or more. Lot's of fencing to be done.
