Hello folks,

I usually carry disposable gloves with me when I field dress animals, but this morning, I didn't have any, and went ahead and dressed the deer anyway. Just interested to hear y'alls thoughts about how risky that is (whether whitetail, hog, etc) with regard to potential exposure to blood borne pathogens, etc. Sometimes don't use gloves? Never use gloves? Always use gloves?

Any other "musts" or "nevers" to consider when dressing an animal?

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Never use them, even on hogs. Hogs I think is where the greater risk is, but still have never used them on pigs.

I use them if they are handy on deer, I would probably use them on pigs for sure.

Never use to, it was part of field dressing. Pigs always. Now I use them because of not much water around at lease.

Very risky. I'd quarentine myself until Sunday, and ingest large amounts of alcohol. Just to be safe.

I don't usually bother with them. If I start out trying to use them, I usually knock a hole in them before I am finished and end up throwing them away anyhow.

Always use on pigs most the time on deer especially if I have a cut on my hand. Keep several boxes of gloves at camp and keep a half dozen pairs in my trauma kit in my truck.

I used to never, but usually do know... And only because of ease of clean up. Not worried about anything else.

never use them cause never have them. Just not something I worry about. Probably more danger in some of the skanks I picked up in my younger years.

I always use them. I buy the heavy duty gloves from Lowes and they're really tough.

The blue, medical gloves are thicker mil. 'Learned that during my brief foray in selling sewer sucking equipment/trucks. grin

They do make clean up much easier. I work faster without though (that's true in a lot of things), and the baby wipes mentioned above by SapperTitan are extremely useful. If a man that's been in the big sandbox says they're a good thing, I don't care if anyone else thinks they're "nancy".

Haha if you knew how many baby wipe showers I've taken in the last 11 years haha. The baby wipes come in handy for a lot of things from wiping down knives after gutting, cleaning hands when water isn't present, cleaning mud or dust off of a weapon while in the field, wiping your but or like mentioned before taking a baby wipe shower. I personally just don't like using a knife in confined spaces with rubber gloves on.

I almost always use nitrile gloves when working on deer or hogs simply because it makes clean up easier for me. I know guys that can gut a deer and barely get any blood on them, I tend to get bloody.

I agree with everything else about the baby wipes. No hot water or toilet at camp and I was just there for six days. Baby wipes got a lot of use. clap
