I have what looks to be a four year old decent 8pt with a injured front leg. Open wound around the joint and is swollen. He seems to be getting around fine over the last two days, even came in to rattling.

I'd hate for the rut or infection to kill him and waste the meat but if his odds are good of surviving I'd like to see him next year.

Deer can survive a lot I'd let him tough it out unless he gets to the point he is really struggling to get around

Deer are pretty resilient, but if he's a 4.5 yr old 8 I might think about taking him out of the herd anyway.

If you have coyotes they will probably take care of him.

My first instinct was to let him walk and have done so several times. A couple of buddies questioned my decision so I decided to ask the experts. smile

I actually like big 8's and would think he would be a stud next year if the injury doesn't stunt stunt him. I'm not sure he can jump a fence right now so maybe he won't get killed at the neighbors.

I Feed Indian Corn. The deer love it and all the colors make them stay at the feeder longer.

If he is something you want to shoot then shoot him. If he is something you only consider shooting because of the leg let him go.

This guy's been hanging around our place for at least three years. Until last Saturday I'd never actually seen him in person, but he looks pretty old at this point. The messed up leg/hoof drags the ground kind of funny when he walks or runs, but he was surprisingly fast considering he essentially has a bum leg. So it's possible the one you saw can survive. It's also possible it could get killed by a predator.

One thing to keep in mind is if you shoot him he may have infection throughout his body and the meat may be questionable.

He's still getting around but I may bust him next time I see him.
