I had no intention of finding a good hunting dog, I was merely trying to find a dog that I could take anywhere with me. My grandparent's friend takes in strays and rescues, and found my pup and his brother and sister on the side of the road at 3 weeks old. He had heard i was searching for a good dog, and called me up. I drove out to his place, he opened the kennel door, and the brother and sister ran around playing. At the age of 1 month old, my pup ran up to me, sat at my feet, and looked me in the eyes. I knew that he was coming home with me, and I think he knew it too. I asked how much he was, and was told he was free, shots and all, as long as he got a good home. Little did I know, he was a lab-GSP mix.

Fast-forward 2 years, and here I am, with the best untrained hunting dog there is. Shiner Bock has never been adequately trained, I just haven't had the time. He goes everywhere with me, even to the stand. He watches the deer intently through the window, never barking or whining, just shaking. I took him dove hunting when he was a year old in 2015, never having shot around him. The first bird, he watched, I shot, he retrieved. Never trained. The next bird fell in the pond, he retrieved. Last deer season, we stumbled upon a covey of quail while walking the property, he went on a dead point, stiff as a board. That same weekend, I shot a doe. I thought it'd be fun to put him on the blood trail as I was tracking her, just to see what he would do. Much to my surprise, I gave up following the blood, because everywhere I found blood, he had already stopped at that spot and kept moving forward, never off the trail. He led me right to her.

I've been blessed.

Here he is, Shiner Bock.

Great story. The pup you rescue will rescue you.

A trainer that I know got his wife a Jack Russel Terrier as she wanted an INSIDE dog.
AS the JRT got older he didn't want to be inside he wanted to be out with Marty training.
He would ride in the ATV and sit and watch the training. One of the drills he does with the dogs is to shoot a bird and then call the dog off of it and make them continue hunting.
Marty noticed that the JRT would get really wound up and want the shot bird. So one day he sent him on a retrieve that was well over 100 yds and the JRT came back with the bird. He had only watched the other dogs working. Marty actually wound up taking that JRT as a guide on Goose hunts. All the hunters would get a big laugh when they saw Marty's GOOSE retriever. They laughed right up until they saw him bring back birds.

Been there. My wife died and left me Muffin.
