The story is the black dogs and I have been hunting dove and teal since season started back up. One off day we had came back from somewhere (I get mauled by the dogs when I get home) and I felt something on P's ear. I thought it was a wasp sting/ant bite or something of that sort since we have been hunting around a ton of them and figured some benadryl and all would be good in a few days. A few days go by and no difference so the gf runs her to the vet for a quick look. Said it was a hematoma and that it would probably end up getting bigger. Surgery was scheduled for the following week. Hunted some more and took her in this morning. Four pills a day and some ointment for week. Stitches come out in 21 days. Said after a few days she could still hunt.

You can see how swole it was here...

Comparison shot...

She was still pretty groggy when I picked her up...

Passing out at the house...

My Black Molly had the same thing happen a few years back. Her poor ear swelled up and looked like a black furry sopapilla. She was out of commission for a couple of weeks, but back at it pretty quick.

My old lab had one and it did not heal correctly with the first surgery. Had to do a 2nd surgery where they put what looked like a bunch of plastic rivets in to basically hold the ear together. It was a nightmare. Hope the first one works out for you!

This is crazy to hear...My labs have had 2 pretty big ones, one in each ear..The Vet said no surgery that it could cause more of a problem...It slowly went down after 2 weeks and both have never appeared again....

It comes on when they shake their heads a lot. Sometimes some yeast or a little trapped water can get in there and itch, which makes them shake even more.... Make sure the dogs ears are real clean inside and I bet it can heal back.

Got stitches?

She was pretty out of it the rest of the day she had the surgery. Pretty much back to normal the next day. Taking the bandage off wasn't very pleasant for any of us. She didn't care for the ointment the first time but hasn't minded since.

The GF took Paxton to the vet a couple of weeks ago to get all her stitches removed. The problem was that she came home without Paxton. They removed all the previous stitches but didn't like how the drainage slit from the last surgery healed so she wanted to freshen up the cut and add a few stitches.

Paxton was not too pleased...

The new stitches...

Then a few days after that I had let the dogs out to the restroom and noticed Whipple had something on the back of her leg when they came back in. Thinking it was a cocklebur I grabbed it but it didn't budge. Turns out it was some kind of growth. Not cool. So after we got back from a hunt one morning the gf took her in to get it looked at. Turned out just being a skin tag and left with an appointment to get it removed on Halloween. She would not have any down time and could hunt immediately. Decided she would get her teeth cleaned at the same time. It would also work out even better because Paxton's stitches were due to come out so we could get it all taken care of at the same time.

The spot...

The dogs do not turn down a car ride...

Waiting to be called back...

The day before I had noticed that Paxton's ear was still draining a bit. So she ended up with some laser treatment and some meds.

She also gets to carry the stitches around a bit longer...

Whipple was not too happy when we picked her up...

Ready to get out of the car...

Spot removed...

Chompers all clean...

Dang...you better get a Christmas card from the vet this year. I've been there and done that....it seems to run in spurts. I hope your stretch is over and they both get to feeling better pretty quickly!

Hope the ear is healed this time, and they are back hunting with you.

Took Paxton back to the vet after a couple of hunts into duck season to get her ear checked on again. All was good and the stitches were removed.

Getting ready to hop in the car...

Finally all healed up...
