I have three brand hunting bullets on my shelf for whitetails and hogs that I want to try for the .308 Winchester, Sierra 150 GK, Sierra 165 GK and the 168 Nosler Ballistic Tips. I am going to use Varget loaded close to max. Which bullet would you pick for whitetail / hog hunting? Range is less than 300 yards. It's my first time using the .308 for hunting.

Any will work but the 168 NBT is most likely to get you an exit if you care about those things.

Not sure any of the 3 is better than the other.

Not sure any of the 3 is better than the other. x2 x3. I'd lean to the 165 SGK, just b/c I have killed a few things in a 308 with it, and it performed great.

Thanks guys for the responses, was curious on expansion on those bullets since it will be impact velocity under 2600 fps at these ranges.I have loaded some up to try to see which shoots better in my rifle.

You'll have no problems with the expansion of the Game King. I use 165gr HPBT in my AR10 and the performance has been great.

Agree, you shouldn't have any problems with expansion at impact velocities in the neighborhood of 2600 fps, even 2400-2500 readily expand with cup and core bullets.

165 gr SGK spire point boat tail, fired from a .308 Win. This is after entering a whitetail buck quartering toward me. Entered front right shoulder, and was recovered left flank. It expanded to .75" and still weighed 142 gr. . . . SGKs might be old school, and not a sexy as some other choices, but they do work.

Serria game Kings for both. The hogs skin is thicker a poly carbonate could over expand at close range. I love Nosler nt on deer

Are you implying impact velocity will be near 2,600 fps, in .308, at 300yds? If so, I'm curious as to what the gun is. At 300yds I'd imagine fps would be maybe 2,200, which is still good for the SGK.

I love Nosler nt on deer I've killed 2 pigs with one shot using a 150gr nosler bt at 75yds out of a 06. Also 3 with one shot with a 150gr 7mm bt. They are tougher than they get a rap for. If pushed really hard they can be troublesome imo.

Nosler has toughened up their "Hunting " BTips a lot since they first came out. I'd be willing to bet that the current 168 BTip would penetrate better than the 165 SGK. But either would be fine at 308 velocities.

Not .308 Win., but I've been using 165 gr. SGK's for my .30-'06 handloads for years without issue. Love 'em.

I've been very happy with the SGK out of my 20" .308. Loaded at 2550 fps (estimate) and I've shot 2 good size pigs in the last few days. One broke a vertebrae and exited, one was a frontal shot that took the shoulder out and didn't exit. Both were drt.

Just got back from the range after running a few loads with 168 Nosler BT and Varget / CCI 200 primers. Ran 3 round groups from 43.2 grains to 45.7 grains of Varget in .3 increments. All the groups were .5 MOA or less, with those two groups looking good enough for some whitetail / hog hunting. I will not play with seating depth or do any tweaking, its good enough for some hunting. I may lean to the slower load at 2,720 fps, deer won't know the difference. P.S. There are other holes in the target with the x on them, ignore them, they were from crappy bullets I was shooting out of the 7mm Mag to fireform new brass.

Based on the latest information, I would lean towards the 168 NBT.

You can't go wrong with any of those bullets but I would start with the Nosler bullet just because it has been a stellar performer for me in both 30-06 and 308 rifles.

I like Nosler BT but I've had cases where it goes straight through on deer (unless I hit bones)
I've gone back to Nosler Partition for deer
based on that I vote for 150 SG
however, BT on hogs still my favorite, explosive and deadly every time

Personally I dont like any plastic on the front of my hunting bullets. Well maybe ELD-X, not sure on that one yet. Anyway SGK or Honady Interlocks are killing bullets. There are several more in that old school look category that gets the job done.
It ain't easy being me.

I'm of the opinion that any 150+ hunting bullet from a 308 Win will kill whitetail and hogs just fine. I would use whatever is most consistently accurate.
