My wife brought home a vizsla pup last night. Unknown linage. I'm interested in training it to retrieve dove and ducks. Has anyone here had any experience with these dogs? Any quirks or things to look out for?

Thanks!

Unknown lineage, I wouldn't get my hopes up.

Lots of quirks but a good one will retrieve just fine.

Yea, that's kinda what I'm thinking. I think I'll give him a shot though.

My neighbor had one that was great. She retrieved two dove at a time on several occasions.

You never know....might as well give it a go and see what happens. There are some vizsla owners on the THF that have made really great versatile hunting dogs out of their vizslas. Do some research on training a hunting pup and enjoy the puppy!

Might as well give him a chance. Remember, you're not married to that pup. If he doesn't work out you can always give it away and start on another one.

Seeing that his wife brought the pup home and he didn't go out and get this dog for just a hunting dog I doubt that is a route he's going to be able to go.

Yep,that's the story. She brought it home from a lady at work. Her and her husband have a vizsla bitch and had it bred. This was the pup they wanted to keep but decided not to. No way I could convince her to trade it.
He does seem to respond well to very basic training. In one day, I've got him coming to me and sitting next to me on command.
If he works out, great. If not, he is still a nice dog.

That's the attitude to have. Sounds like he's already showing you some good signs. Good luck!

I have a 2 year old vizsla now, shes great. I took a chance on her becuase the paretns werent hunters bur come from a good bloodline of hunters for grandparents. She's been doing great has a great nose, I dove hunt, quail hunt and last year she tracked a deer for me. At this point start doing things to make the pup use its nose. I think you have a pretty good chance not too many breeders around here that have bad bloodlines on viszlas but they could be show dogs

Vizslas are not as split between show and field like say Labradors are. The last show I went to, I knew half the vizslas there because of hunt tests or hunting. Put the time in and your Vizsla can do anything you want it to do including retrieving. The biggest quirk is that some Vizslas can be soft to harsh training. Know when to back off when training a Vizsla or you risk shutting them down. Vizslas don't have a dual coat like a Lab and rely more on the oils in their coat for shedding water. A tip is to not bath them any more than you have to during duck season.

Vizslas are great dogs, love people and kids. Not so much with cats though and hate to be left alone. At least mine was.
