Hey guys hoping someone can help out a newbie to trailers. Need to buy one to transport my Polaris 800 Ranger. Have borrowed trailers in the past but just need to go ahead and buy my own. Below are a few questions I have. Greatly appreciate any help or feedback

1) My ranger is 5ft wide and 9.5 ft long. Would a 6X10 trailer be sufficient or is this too tight and need to buy something bigger. Would only be using the trailer to transport the ranger

2) If buying one used and we will assume it would be a 6X10. What would you consider a good price? Looks like a brand new one at Tractor Supply runs about $1300. What should I expect for asking price on used?

3) If buying used what are some things I should look for to make sure Im not getting screwed and buying a piece of junk?

Thanks

Andrew

Does it have a gate on it or is it open. The rear wheels will fit If it does not have a fold up gate you should be fine. I have a single cab ranger that fits on a 5x8 trailer with the gate. I have to let the gate down about a foot so the bed will clear. I just hold the gate in place with chains on each side with no problems

The 6X10 should be perfect. I got new front tires on my Gator. It will no longer fit between my tailgate on my pickup. I borrowed a 6x10 from my neighbor. It's a perfect fit. I used the tailgate and the spare tire as stops in the back.

Buy a new trailer. Price difference isnt going to be much. I purchased a 6*14 single axle big tex when i bought my ranger. I like the extra couple of feet for coolers, feeder barrel ect...

A lot can go wrong buying a used trailer if your not certain what to look for.

As a rule of thumb, always buy a bit bigger than you think you need. Thank me later.

I would buy a regular 16 foot tandem. You can put the ranger plus some stuff. You have 2 extra tires in case of flat/blow out, and it really doesn't cost much more and isn't any harder to tow than the little trailers. A tandem will handle the load better and tow smoother as well.

6 1/2' by 14' single axle was my choice. The 16' tandem is great but too tongue heavy for me to lift. Single axle I can lift and move around.

Don't let them sale you one with biased tires are you will regret.

I bought a 16 ft tandem axle trailer for $1600. I wouldn't pay 1300 for a 10 ft

Like others have said, get more than you need. You will use it later. A 6x12 would leave you room for ice chests, corn, etc.

Tandems are great, but if you need to move it around by hand single axle is nice.

I bought a new 6.5x12 with gate here in Houston a couple years ago. I gave around $900 for it if I recall correctly. TSC is high on trailers.

I spec'd mine with EZ lube axle and bulldog hitch. Tongue runs all the way to the fenders, and is made from 4" channel. Cheaper models will have 3" and only go to the front of the trailer.

I tow my Ranger with the 6.5*14 mentioned above but have access to larger tandem trailers when needed. Not any difference than pulling a large tandem in quality of ride with the trailer behind.

There is only one thing that sucks worse than having too much trailer and that's not having enough.

This. I haul my Teryx4 on a 16 foot tandem. It has a job box on the front and I have room for the ScS and coolers. It tows great, never know it's back there. I would not want to tow these things on a single axle trailer. They catch a lot of wind, which results in trailers walking behind vehicles.

If I could redo it, I would have a 20 foot car hauler. Makes loading stands much easier, tying things down is easier, and I can still have rails up front to keep coolers from sliding off.

What is the weight of your Ranger? I would think a 6x12 would be my preferred size if not going up to a 16' tandem. Texas Trailer Supply has beat prices on anywhere else I have looked on several trailers I purchased for myself and friends. I think they would seriously beat $1300 on a 6x10.

I think a 10' trailer would be too short to get the proper angles for your tie downs front and rear. Not a big deal if only hauling on smooth roads, but can be if driving down bumpy roads on a lease.
If your Hallettsville, there is a LoadTrail dealer.

6x12 is a good size, pay a little more and get a bigger axle. The bounce of rough roads with a ranger is enough to bend a light weight axle.

Yes that's correct 3500lbs, I like the 5200lbs on a single axle. If you look at a lot of single axles the inside of the tires will be wore off.

I bought a single axle BigTex trailer - 77"W x 12'long - has a loading ramp. My Mahindra mPact XTV fits nicely

I'm glad I got a dual axle 16 footer with led lights and brakes. Got plenty of extra room to haul other stuff. The cost difference usually isn't much and used 16 foot trailers are super common. I think I was in it for like 2300 or something two years ago brand new.

single axel trailer is an accident looking for a place to happen.

A tandem axle trailer is twice as many accidents looking for a place to happen.

If you tow a lot you will have instances where you will whip the trailer. A tandem axel will straighten out faster and be a lot less likely to flip the tow vehicle. Also very true on slick roads where trailer can loose transaction. Tandem is much much safer.

but the trailer contributes and tandems are much stabler.
