I was blasting away yesterday with that Ruger Hawkeye that Horizon rebarrelled for me. I'm happily stacking bullets on top of the last bullet and just having a good time. And I noticed how good the burned powder smelled. It's H335. Went and got the 260 and shot it a few times (IMR 4064). Hmmm. H335 smells better.

Sounds crazy, but do any of you have a favorite smelling powder? My wife would probably factor smell into her powder choices if she reloaded.

Never notice it too much with rifles, but love the smell of a fresh fired shotgun shell. No idea what powder it is.

Funny you ask! I've always said they need to make a woman's perfume smell like R15!

H335 smells good. I have a new Lovex powder that I like the smell of also. But my favorite powder smell is the new IMR 4451 and 4166 smells. They have a really sweet smell, and are very unique.

IMR 4895's smell reminds me of when I 1st started reloading with a cigar box Lee Kit off my apartments dinner table in 1968. Had a RO at the old Winchester Range on Luna Rd in Dallas I shot at every Saturday in those years comment on the distinctive smell that he too enjoyed...said it reminded him of his days during the Korean War shooting at ChiCom troops trying to take his ridge top dug in position veeery unsuccessfuly.

BUt on the serious subject of the smell of burnt powder...I like the smell of Wolf rimfire ammo. It has a sweet smell.

I've noticed that some of my smokeless rifle powders yield a faint odor of ammonia (which I really don't care for at all), but I have to admit my sniffer is somewhat out of whack a good part of the time. I smell and taste stuff in a way most people can't understand. Cooked blueberry often tastes like the odor of peat moss to me and I like skunky beer. I even kinda like the smell of skunk when it's just a faint odor. I like the smell of burnt matches too. I know that's probably pretty weird, but I never claimed to be normal...then again maybe I AM normal and everyone else is weird. Yeeaaahhhhh---that's the ticket!

I'll tell you what I think stinks: most of the steel-cased imported 7.62x39 ammo. They must use cow manure as filler.

The Hornady steel-cased 123 gr SST rounds smells the same. Makes me wonder where they really come from.

I have to agree with the shotgun shells...especially after hunting in a field of goatweed all day.

I love the smell of a hot woman out of the shower. banana2

Kidding aside, the thought of which gunpowder smelled better never came to my mind, just the shooting part.

Unique. Especially under an Alox lubed cast bullet. Smells like frontier justice and victory.

I personally love the smell of napalm in the morn .......... oops. Got carried away.

The only time I have ever noticed a powder's odor was the first time I shot H335. Other than that, I've never paid any attention to them. confused2 wink

LMAO. roflmao You guys have run plum out if things to discuss. I guess another way to look at it would be "This is manly man stuff". I've considered the way the powders smell too, just never thought about bringing it up. It has been good reading though. Continue.

It seems we have been unable to find anything to argue about regarding the smell of burnt powder. argue

Conclusion: the thread is a complete flop.
