I grew up deer hunting in Missouri. Some of the most success I had bowhunting came from clearing a small (50 yd x 50 yd) area deep in the woods and planting a small honey hole food plot there. I'd lay the cut timber strategically so any deer that walked in had to present a broadside shot. I was thinking about trying something similar on a property in East Texas (Anderson County between Frankston and Palestine). Any idea what might work there? We typically did a mix of clover and turnips in the midwest. Appreciate any advice!

Yes. It will work...if you get rain. Been a tough year on food plots due to the lack of rain where I hunt in ETX. I use a mix of Buck Forage Oats, Winter Wheat, and Austrian Winter Peas in my plots. The peas get ate up fast, then the oats, the wheat will carry you through the season.

Depends on your location and number of deer. 50x50 will feed a handful of deer through a few months.. I like hunting them best during January

Never seen Turnips get heavily browsed (in East Texas anyway).
My staples are Oats, Wheat and Peas (deer love peas). Unfortunately, hogs love peas too.

They'd eat the leaves and chew the bulb down to soil level. Evidently they're high in protein. Appreciate all responses. Any luck with clover in East TX?

Yes, clover (if you have the soil for it) is excellent in East Texas. Turnips are often ignored or passed over here....because the leaves don't become 'sweet' until they have experienced a hard frost or two. That might not happen until late in our season, better to plant things that they will utilize right away.

I have a small, 1/4 acre plot in a secluded area of Houston County that always produces several deer harvests each season. I plant a combination of oats throughout, with smaller sections of turnips and mustard greens. After that first killing frost, the deer start hammering it.

Do the deer tear through a 1/4 acre quick? I want to plant an acre and need to figure out a year round planting schedule

Sounds like a good idea. How do you keep the hogs from eating everything?

I use oats and a bag of MBS Wildlife Buck Plot Booster in each of my plots. It has a mix of greens, clover, and peas that is formulated to grow in east TX. Many ag supply places in east TX have their own mix which is similar.
My deer used to pick around the greens for the oats, but now they have taken to the greens too and eat them like crazy.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.
