I noticed the Panhandle received some good rain showers today. Just wondering if any of you guys up near Plainview, Olton, Hereford, Dumas or Spearman are seeing wild pheasants in numbers anywhere near normal numbers or near 2010 before the bad drought started.

I know nobody got a frost or freeze yet, so the cover is still high, with no reports from TP&WD yet, I am just wondering.

My friend in Spearman cancelled our hunt - says not enough birds to sustain hunting pressure yet - but another good year and we should be ready.

Are there any recent reports from around the Hart area?

Got this from Pheasants Forever...

TEXAS—PHEASANTS CONTINUE POST-DROUGHT REBOUND
Forecast: Texas pheasants continue to rebound from the state’s drought of the last several years. Although the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department won’t conduct surveys until October and November, wildlife managers expect good hunting.

“Pheasant numbers showed a moderate bounce in 2015, and we anticipate another bump this year,” says Calvin Richardson, district 2 leader for the department. “Landowners and biologists have been seeing a few more birds this summer, including some localized concentrations. Pheasant hunters should find fair to good hunting opportunities this year, especially in areas with irrigated grain crops adjacent to good cover such as playas or CRP that has not been hayed or grazed.”

“As usual, some of the better pheasant numbers will be found in Dallam, Hartley, Hansford, Sherman, Ochiltree, Deaf Smith, Moore, Carson, and Roberts counties,” says Richardson. “Although a little more inconsistent in distribution, Swisher, Briscoe, Castro, and Parmer counties will be supporting a few birds in localized situations.”

Can't speak for around Hart, but in my area the birds are recovering. Not back to pre 2011 by any means, but where the habitat is good the birds are there. Been out running my pup almost everyday, and in almost all the places we are able to scratch up a bird or two, and in some places I've seen enough birds to make you think you were in South Dakota. Of course I haven't been taking the dog there, saving those for December!

Dallam, Hartley county....

I walked into one of my duck holes on the opening day of duck season and had about 30 pheasants get out of the brush around it. It is about 2 miles from Hart and is part of the property offered to the Lions Club hunters...that is about all the information I will disclose about it grin

As for the population in that area as a whole, still very spotty.

Thanks for the help. I am headed that way at the end of the first week for a few days. I will be hunting the Lion's club land by myself with just one or two dogs. Again thanks for the info.
