I realize that this is a hunting forum, not a self-defense or prepper forum but this article is worth consideration, since more than one or two of you out there in THF Land are a bit concerned about the protection of you and your family.

I'll stick with modern hollow points. I just don't see any reasonable benefit in jumping back 40 years in technology.

I think any round, even a wadcutter, would do the trick. A lead projectile traveling at 2000+ fps will do some damage.

Wisdom. cheers

When you look at the wounds the 2 types of bullets create, you'll choose the hollow point. IMHO

Back in the 50's reversed wadcutters was the go to round when the 38 special and 4 inch revolvers were the norm for most departments. I can say that a reversed wadcutter load going over 1200 fps from a 357 magnum is explosive on jackrabbits. Many of the new flying ashtray designs are just an attempt to duplicate it's performance while still reliably cycling through an auto. I don't see it as jumping back 40 years as much as I see it holding on to a technology that has proven itself effective with just a few mods to make it work in modern firearms. The only real difference between these loads is the copper jacket. Put that same jacket on a wadcutter where you can increase the speed without fouling the barrel with lead and it's right up there with the best of the defensive loads if not on top.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

While modern ammo helps, in older non +p snubbies the Nyclad lead hollow point is a viable option due to the lack of velocity.

99% of the ammo in my household is what it is because i intend to hunt/kill something with it. I think they will serve to protect me and mine just as well as they do at killing deer and hogs.

At 650fps with a 148 wadcutter out of a 2", I think better options exist.

At non+P speeds a lead bullet will generally expand well. SWC-HP's or a Nyclad is still great. The lightweight modern projectiles will have less recoil, but I don't think results will be much different.

Not exactly the same...Back in the Day I had more fun thana barrel of monkeys hunting abandoned RR right of way thickets for Cottontails in the dead of winter with Semi Wadcutters out of a S&W M60..really tried to concentrate on head shots 'cause if you hit mid section's usually they weren't worth picking up for all the meat damage...fresh fried bunny rabbit's is a real treat when you know they aren't full of wolls.

I remember shooting wadcutters at the range and actually able to see the projectile as it headed down range. They're slow. I've also seen lots of them ricochet back at the firing line from the back stop. Shooting steel or even bowling pins can be dangerous.

To date, the deadliest load for the .357 Mag is the 125g jacketed hollow point.

American Handgunner published an article on the use of hard cast, gas checked wadcutters
at decent velocity for self defense. Seems that Buffalo Bore is marketing these loads
as Anti Personnel. Seems like a fair idea. The sharp edges cut all the way thru. While
I admit I carry HP SD loads for EDC, Buffalo Bore has a good idea.
If you go the American Handgunner website, you can find the article.

Wadcutters are great for one thing- Penetration!!!! They will penetrate better than most bullets. But you lack expansion. Wadcutters will pass straight through your target and not expand, just like a full metal jacket will. If you want better terminal performance, then a hollow point is the answer. HP bullets expand, creates a larger wound channel, dumps more energy into a shorter distance. Wadcutters will work, but it's like shooting something with a field point arrow. Will a wadcullter kill- sure. Does a HP bullet kill better- yes! Technology advances for the better. Shoot a hollow point for self defense!
