Use the sponge method. Looks good, and it's the fastest process there is. Once you like it, apply matte finish clear over all of it.

The trick to any paint job, rattle cans especially, is 1. prep work - everything needs to be cleaned and degreased thoroughly. Smooth surfaces need to be scuffed up to increase the surface area to improve adhesion. 2. When working with rattle cans, put the cans in a warm water bath, and shake them good and hard to make sure they are ready to go. Before and after using the the can, turn it upside down and push the button to clear the nozzle. 3. Apply several thin even coats. Several thin even coats is a lot better than 1-2 thick coats. Don't try to get perfect coverage on the first or second coat. A thick coat of paint takes longer to dry hard and the thickness makes it much more prone to peeling and chipping. 4. Follow the directions on recoat and dry times. If at all possible, do not mix brands and types of paint. Here is one I did with a stone texture finish

By the way, since you are doing a camo pattern, IF you want better control of the spray pattern, cut a hole in a piece of cardboard and hover it over what you are spraying and spray through the hole. Practice on some old boxes, you will get a feel for how big to make the hole and how far away to hold the cardboard for different spray sizes/affects.

Use the sponge method. Looks good, and it's the fastest process there is. Once you like it, apply matte finish clear over all of it. You can also apply a clear coat between each color layer to add more depth to the pattern. We do this on guitar finishes a lot to make it look like you are looking into the finish instead of just at the finish.

I've been getting pretty good at it. I've done 2 guns now in GAP camo with Rustoleum that have turned out really well. Here are my steps: degrease thoroughly, allow to dry, paint the 1st color, wait 48hrs, place stencils and paint 2nd color, wait 48hrs, place stencils and paint 3rd primary color, wait 7 days, apply Valspar flat clearcoat, wait 48hrs, apply clearcoat again, wait 7 days, reassemble everything.
Everyone that has seen the 2 guns assumes it was painted by a pro. I'll post up pics later.
I've also rattle canned an AR15 that I initially attempted a sponge application that turned out terrible. I ended up just freehanding it and worked great.

i painted one of my shotguns recently with great success, even though the reeds that i hand painted look a little cartoonish. i have learned it helps to take your time. but i have never tried the sponge method

I have tried everything from Camo Dip jobs to rattle can jobs. It is all fun cause if you don't like how it turned out you just do something else. This is the last one I did, yes it was a rattle can, primer, 4 colors and a satin clear on top. Just get creative and try something. Like I said if you don't like the way it came out just do something else.

I did this one. You can get a stencil set off eBay that will help.

Nice work! How durable is the paint job? Comparable to DuraCoat or CeraKote? The CeraKote is a two-part solution that you spray on after a total degrease and bake job on the parts you want to coat.

Here's an 870 Express Magnum I did, and have done several since then, including some optics. 1. Degrease 2. Coat of grey primer 3. One solid base coat of any of your three colors 4. Hold natural objects against parts (twigs, small branches with leaves, blades of grass clumped together) and spray over them with second color while randomly placing them in different locations. 5. Repeat with last color 6. Two coats of clear Plan on spending half a day on this to allow for thorough drying time. Krylon Camo spray paint.
An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

Mine wasn't durable at all. Also because of the several overlayed coats it made it thick and made parts start to jam up on it. I gave it to Christian at Scalpel Arms and had him cerakote for me. Like it much better.

When doing optics, pack the lens cavities with cotton, lay a layer of plastic wrap over the cotton, then compress some Styrofoam pieces on each end, hold it all together with a tight rubber band. Remove your turret caps and cover your threads and turrets with tape. Use the same process above.

What kind of paint do y'all use?
Anyone try Duracoat? They have a high heat Duracoat you can use on the rifle barrel.

When you do your scope, try this. I made a simple rack that held lens covering in place and allowed me to pick it up while spraying. The rubber band works also, but I really had an easier time doing it this way.
