Bought some 62 grain soft points for a pretty good deal. They are cannelured. Have my 223 die set perfectly for loading 60 grain max. Accuracy is off the chart. That is my precision load. These will be plinkers. I hate to adjust the die (no crimp) as its nails. Question is do I "have" to crimp the cannelures or no? Never loaded one

NOPE.

I've loaded them out to the OAL I wanted which was way past the cannelure. They shoot just fine.

I've done the same.

I crimp everything.

Same here. I can see how ammo for a gas gun might need to be crimped, though I do not crimp the ammo for the LR-308. It is certainly possible I may have to crimp for AR-15, when I finally get around to load development for it. crazy

I actually lied... I do crimp 45 colt, 45-70, and 44 mag, but nothing that goes in a non tubular magazine rifle.

Straight walled cases I crimp, tubular magazine rounds I crimp but like Redchevy the rest do not get crimped. On the AR rounds I will have a little more neck tension to hold the bullets in place but no crimp.

I must admit I'm a crimper. I just feel more comfortable when I crimp my rounds.

I've noticed an accuracy loss crimping with the lee fcd. I chambered and ejected a non crimped round from an open bolt 10 times and there was no movement in oal.
