I recently purchased a Canon T5i and snapped a few pics of the full moon tonight. I may need to take a few classes to learn how to use this thing

Should have seen the first few pics. It would focus and I could see everything until I took a pic then it was just a bright moon and no detail Had to come in and use the Google on settings

I tried taking pics of the moon and they looked more like a 60 watt light bulb.

Yes it was

Set on a tripod
Set ISO to 100
Set Aperture to about f/8 (for depth of field)
And then check your in-camera meter for exposure. As bright as it is, I'd meter to the left, or dark.
Manually focus.
You can use a remote to activate the shutter or use the 5 or 10 second delay.
Also, go into Settings and select "Mirror Up", so you won't have movement of the mirror causing vibrations.

Be careful with cropping. You're losing detain when you crop too much.

Thanks. I think I did f/11 Iso 100 and then 100-200-then 400. I will use the remote tonight.

The best advice I can give anyone starting into wildlife photography is to keep the ISO as low as possible and the shutter speed as fast as possible. Use single (center) focus point and put it on the eye of whatever you're shooting. For wildlife, I use Spot Metering instead of Center Weighted or Evaluative. Use Auto White Balance. I try to use mid to small aperture ratings as often as possible. Most cameras and lenses take sharper images at f/8, give or take.

You'll get sharper images when you're shutter speed is equal to or greater than your focal length. Ex: With a 600mm lens you should keep your shutter speed faster than 1/600 sec.

Use higher ISO to push your shutter faster. Your camera can render decently clean images to ISO 2500 or thereabouts. You can play around with it and find where images begin to get grainy and lose detail. Cropping will enhance graininess in high ISO images.
