Going to work up a load for the 6.5 x 284 ( 27 inch barrel & 9 twist) with H4831SC and 123 SMK, I see three nodes on Quickload with #4 node as the fastest around 3175 fps ( 57.6 grains) . What loads ( powders ) do most of you who sling 120 to 123 bullets out of the 6 .5 x 284 and what velocity? Just curious about highest velocity because reloading manuals say 51 grains as max charge when QL max charge would be 57+ grains. Of course I will do the .4 increment loads to find max load. Just don't want to waste bullets on a barrel burner. This barrel is close to its demise.

6.5-284 is one round I have found doesn't seem to play well with my rifle. Using the same powder and 140gr Berger VLDs 52gr powder and start getting sticky bolt lift. 51.5 is one of my most accurate loads with that combination though.
Run the numbers and QL shows max load should be much higher than that. Tried with 2 lots of powder and same results.
Start with the loading manuals start loads and workup your way up.

Yep, I'm with kmon1. I shoot 140 grain Sierra Game Kings out of my Remington (long) action, and 140 grain Sierra Pro Hunters out of my Mauser action. BOTH like 50 grains of H4831SC.

Just what I figured, i knew the 57 grain charge is too hot. I'll work up .4 from 49.5 and see what I'll find. Thanks guys

With the 123 gr bullets your max load powder charge will be larger than ours with 140s but expect you will reach max before getting to that 57gr charge.
With the 27 inch barrel and 140s H1000 would be the powder I would be trying first and some day I will try it in the 24 inch barrel, or might get around to it.

That is with the Berger VLDs

The calculations with the 6.5x284 is all over the map. So, shoot your to find out. The reason is there are MANY different chamber designs and free bores with this round. Shoot it to know for sure.
