I have some new lapua and hornady brass, two different calibers.
How much prep do y'all do on brand new brass?

I'm a dude who likes long barrels!

I tend to be a bit AR, but I treat my new brass just like it was "once fired." I FL resize, chamfer the necks, inside and out, clean out the primer/flash hole. Then I build a "fire forming" reload for them and shoot 'em up to get the brass to conform to the particular chamber on my rifle. I then will neck resize and begin building my "ladder" loads, seeking the various sweet spots that may present themselves as I work through them. My experience has been that the Lapuas, though hideously expensive, are more consistent, higher quality than any other brass.

If the lapua is new in the box, I usually just check to make certain there aren't any dings in the case mouth then load them up. Hornady and most others, I'll do like mikei states, FL size, chamfer, check primer pocket for uniformity the run a mid-range load through 'em to form them to my specific rifle. etc. etc

Rifles are similar to boats and young women...there's no end to how much money you can pour into them without making them any more useful.

Lapua brass, I just chamfer the case mouth with a VLD chamfer tool (which I do ALL my single stage brass) and prime and load. Hornady brass sometimes needs a little TLC and the necks run up into a sizer die or over the madrel to round out the mouth. Winchester on the other hand, you better prep it like it were once fired. I think Winchester has a school of kids that play with the case with a hammer before the package them up. They are horribly bad and beat up. FL size and heavy chamfer needed on the Win brass.

Ive never used anything as nice as Lapua brass, but with new brass I typically FL size, trim chamfer and debur.

I use a lot of 6br Lapua brass and the necks are pretty tight to use straight out the box. I normally run a .257 mandrel thru the neck and FL size in a bushing die with no expander button. Uniform the primer pockets and then run a reamer (not a debur a reamer) through the flash hole. Chamfer the mouth Then I fireform. Rarely will I use a piece of virgin brass for anything besides punching holes in paper or steel.

After they are all fireformed at least once (prefer twice) I'd look at trimming. Sometimes I'll clean up the necks but not always.

Crappy brass is a whole lot more work and I prefer not to do it...my 6slr though likes Win brass...it's a PIA and more steps.

These days I buy Norma and Lapua brass. I run them through a Lee Collet Die and then through the RCBS trimmer with the 3 way cutter head. Doesn't take long.

I normally use only Lapua, I'll buy Norma brass if Lapua brass is not available. I hate Winchester and Remington brass, they always get beat up around the case mouths.

I load Lapua for the 7-08. Out of the box , chamfer a bit, and in goes the stuff.

Hornady for the Creedmoor and 243. Resize and the whole process.

Winchester for the ARs. Resize and the whole process.

Never had any problems.
