postoak, I'm agreeing with your thinking. How many times have we read that if there is any question, don't shoot. This deer is as prime as I have ever seen. He looks like bambi's dad from the movie. But even with the head cocked slightly I would still have to question if he was a legal deer if AR's applied given the TPWD "13 inch ear estimate".

What a great problem to have.

What if I told you the outside the ears 13 inch rule doesn't work for all deer shocked !!That is a bigger deer. If you go up to Michigan or Missouri a bunch of those spreads will be even with the ears and it might be 15-17 inches wide, but the reason is because they are much bigger bodied deer.

That's true across Texas also, deer size changes. From hill country to panhandle might be a couple inches on ear tips. Plus they say ears in alert position, that is a blanket term, this can be different position for each deer. I bet this deer is 16" wide, if not a hair over.

Yeah, I can buy that. The point I was making is that the TPWD rule of thumb to estimate 13" spread is very close for this deer. Let's be honest - he's a huge deer. Couldn't this be a factor that makes the majority of the responders here say he's AR legal by (my words) a comfortable margin?

I'm just putting this out there for thought. If you use the eartip inside spread estimate on this guy you're going to have to look thrice.

Let me ask you this. If you saw him posing like this and then took the shot just to find out the ground shrinkage took him to 12 7/8", how would you feel?

A deer with that big of body and antlers like that i would know he would be legal if it looked like that. Now a deer like the one in this pic is different because his body is much smaller. This deer was 12 3/4 inches.

The point is, you shouldn't "guess" that the ear rule doesn't apply if you want to be sure of not violating the law. Even if the inside spread equals ear spread you can't be sure. The 120 inch deer I've got on my wall has ears that only measure 12".

But that is why NO one else has the 13 inch rule!!! Because you can't measure that way with big bodied deer. That's why they have point restrictions. 4 or 5 points on one side is the most common AR rule in the country. I have a 148 inch 11 point I shot in Missouri that is right at 13 inches and is inside the ears by a decent amount

Well over 13"...I wouldn't have hesitated to lay him down with that look right there

BUT...I hope he makes it another year for you, and we have another year of good forage for him to fill up on up

I would be more than happy to come out and cull that foul animal and relieve you of the stress of ever having to make that difficult decision again.

I Feed Indian Corn. The deer love it and all the colors make them stay at the feeder longer.

Good call Cattleman.....I think he's plenty legal and plenty mature but if you have to talk yourself into it, it aint the right thing to do.
Maybe there will be no doubts next year.

Good luck and Good hunting to ya.
