My father has done a lot for me this year, and I want to do something nice for him. My dad loves revolvers, and is a fan of the 357 magnum cartridge.

I would love to buy him a SW 27, but that is out of the budget. Looks like the Ruger 357s are coming in between $5-600. I would want a vaquero, but I know my dad would want something with nice sights. The Blackhawk is a nice gun, but I don't have any experience with the new Ruger double action revolvers. I am going to start shopping around next week to get a feel for the firearms, and I was just curious what everyones' opinion is on which model they like best.

Which Ruger 357

SP101 if he would want to CC. I want one for that purpose but haven't taken the plunge yet.

GP 100 is a nice gun too.

My GP100 is one of those guns I would never get rid of. I never get tired of shooting and it goes with my on every trip to the woods or the range. It's the perfect companion to my Rossi M92 357 Trapper.

I had an SP101. It was alright, but I sold it just a couple of days after finding a Security Six.

Good point Cow-doc

My dad would not be carrying this pistol. He would mostly just take it plinking, and I could forsee him shooting a doe or two with it.

For those purposes I would go with the GP100. THe SP101 is an awesome revolver, I bought one for my wife, who is a committed Python snob. She is happy with it, and it serves its purpose well.

I would love to have a Python. I have a custom shop SAA with a 7.5" barrel that is absolutely amazing that my parents bought me as a graduation gift when I finished my doctorate.

Either a gp or Blackhawk, depending if you wanted to buy a double or single action.

The Blackhawk is available with a 9mm cylinder, too, if desired.

Ruger revolvers are awesome. Does your Dad prefer S/A or D/A? If he has no preference my vote goes for the GP100.

My 6" gp100 is the cats meow! Accurate, reliable, and down right sexy.

Is this for carry or hunting? If hunting go with the Blackhawk with a minimum of 5.5 barrel, I prefer 7.5. Poor boy trigger job (Release the spring on one side or the other )and your good to go. For carry or a house or vehicle pistol go with the 4 inch GP.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

I've only ever owned vaqueros, but they both shoot very well. Really one of the funnest handguns I've ever shot and they're relatively easy to shoot due to the design that lets the gun move upward instead of into your hand when shooting heavier loads.

Can't go wrong with a blackhawk, though if it was for hunting you might want to go bigger than the .357. I own my share of them, but there is a big gap between the .357 and .44 magnum in terms of killing power. That's not to say that either of them are inadequate, just personal opinion, I shot a buck last year with my R92 in .357 and it did well.

Blackhawk, but that's just because I like a single action and you already ruled out the Vaquero due to lack of sights. The others listed are fine revolvers as well, and I don't think you'll go wrong with any in the bunch.

I just got a gp 100 4" 357, man it's ridiculous how accurate and good it feels.

The .357 Blackhawk is an absolute joy to shoot. It's heavy, well balanced, capable of a perfect trigger, and can be dressed up to match any bbq gun. That being said, some revolver guys prefer a double action trigger, and if that's the case a 6" GP100 with the old style grip is hard to beat.

Talking to my Dad on the phone, and he randomly mentions that he would like to have a Beretta 92. Totally floored me. My entire life, he has told me about he prefers revolvers to semi auto pistols.

The .357 Blackhawk with the 9mm cylinder makes sense now, but maybe a long shopping expedition would be better then a surprise gift.

My 92 is easily the best handgun I've ever shot.

They make a Davidson Gp100 in a 5inch barrel - I have one and it shoots great. most ones you will find or either 4 or 6 . I had a 6inch until it was stolen & replaced with the 5inch and like it better. Gp100 are heavy - go stainless if you can. They also make a gp100 in stainless that's called a match champion that is pretty sweet.

Black Hawk, I have hunted deer, coyotes, Impala in Zimbabwe and carried that revolver more than any other that I have owned. Solid, affordable, accurate and beautiful to look at. I agree with your Dad .357 is an excellent choice in a revolver.

I bought a brand new Ruger Blackhawk, blued finish, 6.5" barrel yesterday. Should arrive sometime early next week. $484, free shipping, no CC fees, and I found a local FFL to do a $15 transfer. All the local stores wanted a little $600 for that pistol, plus 8.3% sales tax.

I always bring a GP100 as my side piece in the woods. Lately I've been hunting with a Marlin 1894C so its really easy for me to just bring 1 type of ammo
