Well we sat down for youth season to a wheat field full of deer. Had bucks running does, deer eating corn and turkeys within five yards. My son was all about this buck running this doe and he said that was the one he wanted. Keep in mind he's 7 and the buck was 300+ yards away. We watched him chase his doe and soon they had gone. Deer slowly made it to our feeder but no bucks. As they walked away I looked at my son who had a sick look on his face, he said "why didn't you let me shoot one?". Well crap I thought he wanted a buck so I got his gun up and he fired a shot and missed one of the doe at 150 yards. He was devistated to my complete surprise. We talked about missing, I told him about some of mine and I profusely apologized for not letting him shoot those doe at 25 yards!

That afternoon we got back at it. He was eating one of the 79 loud wrappered snacks that my wife gave him to take (the house is 200 yards from the blind) and a young buck came out for a bite of corn. I saw the deer and told him to get his gun. He looked and said that's the one HE wanted and he let one fly. The deer jumped and ran and watched him jump a fence and pile up. We called Papa and got down to go get him. He was smiling and shaking and I got some damn cedar in my eyes. Kids are something else, and he taught me a lesson that day for sure. He is as happy with that deer as I would be with a 200 inch deer.

It's not what we want it's about the kids...that slipped my mind that day but it won't happen again!

Great job Dad. His smile says it all. I learned the same lesson from my son. Cherish the time and memories, they grow up too damn quick.
I mounted my sons first buck and he was that size,,,,it is still my favorite hunt. His too and he is now 20 and has killed numerous bucks since then.
