Drove down to Balcones yesterday. My kid got drawn for the youth hunt next weekend. She got unit 7-B. We went in the middle of the day, and didn't see a deer anywhere, but we were riding thru, making quite a bit of racket, and I only got out and walked in our area.
It is a rugged place, lots of elevation, rough roads, etc... The grass is tall, which is going to make tough to hunt from a pop-up. I saw a ton of hog sign.
Anyone else have any reports?

I hunted 7-D last year and only saw one deer. Only one deer was killed on 7 during our hunt. It doesn't seem like there are many deer on the place and I wonder if USFW culls after the season. I did see a hog trap and lots of hog sign.

Good to hear any input as I drew into the area, having second thoughts about it now.

Thanks, Tom

Well on the plus side it's a pretty scenic place and reminds me a lot of hunting in the west.
I'll take your spots if you don't want to go!

I know a landowner that borders the BC. They said the BC employees know of 2 pair of breeding mountain lions that have decimated the deer population over the last 10 years. BC will not trap them. Landowner doesn't even hunt the land anymore as it is a near dead zone...
