Got a button buck with mama coming regular. Watched them for 20 minutes yesterday.

What happens when rut starts? Dominant buck run him off? Or he just hang out while mama gets ger groove on?

He was sniffing mama inappropriately....

She should run him off. I would of thought she would have by now tho.

I've seen young bucks stay in the same group for a couple of years before joining a bachelor group. Usually the doe will move him along, but not always.

I have seen people like that. Need to be taken out of the gene pool.

I watched a fawn without spots nurse or attempt to nurse from its mother a week ago. Depending on where you hunt, the rut can still be several weeks out.

All of my fawns are with their Mothers and generally stay with them all season. Mom might kick them off for a few days while breeding but their always close.

I had two doe under the yard feeder a few days ago. It was mother and child, and the fawn spots were gone. The 'child' was shoving mom off the corn, or at least trying to, and then the not-so-little one wanted milk and started bumping mom in the udder pretty hard. And then he got milk.

Three years ago we had twin fawns in the yard. They were inseparable, and hung out together the following year. One was a budding buck and the other was a doe, and they were together till the rut. After the rut, here they were again. Pretty sure it was the same twins. About the last time I saw them, he still had his antlers, and I remember the weather was pretty warm. He had some corn at the feeder, then slowly strolled into the front yard and got down on his belly and hung his tongue out and appeared to be relaxing. Here came a doe, which I am totally convinced was his sister. She looked for corn, which I guess he had eaten, then she briskly walked directly to him. They touched noses and then she kicked him hard and made him get up. Then, off to the pond she walked, with him right behind her, with his head hung down. Bossy sister, just like humans.

We've got a doe on camera and I saw her yesterday that's extremely thin and has a fawn with spots with her.

She was eating good and seemed to feel ok but just super skinny. She's kind of small. I have a feeling she's a yearling that got bred really late and hasn't been able to maintain body weight while growing and nursing a baby. Could be wrong but that's my thoughts.

A buck fawn will still be with his mother. She'll leave him and then pair back up after she gets with a buck during the rut. Later in the spring, before she has her new fawns, they will separate for good.

A lot depends on when she dropped that fawn. The later the drop, the later she will kick him off.

This^^^ This is what I've seen here in the hill country. Our neighborhood is covered in deer so I get to know them pretty well.

We are deep south tx. Our fawns are born in august and are still very young by the open of the season. We still see some fawns with spots at the opener. These will stay with the mother a while yet. Our rut doesn't start until DEC. The mothers will start to run off the buck fawns by then, but some may not fully leave until another is on the way.

Most years we have a small late rut, so we have some young fawns every year. When I say late I mean Jan-Feb late.

I don't know when most of our breeding actually occurs. We will have younger bucks starting to chase a little by late NOV or early DEC. and we will still have bucks chasing into FEB. By game cameras and field time our most frequent observation of our most mature bucks comes between Christmas and that first or second week of Jan. I would presume this to be the peak of true rutting activity as this is when the big deer are most active.
