This was a big misconception I had when I got into LE too. I just assumed all cops were gun guys but I was wrong.
good example at gun shows leo's tying guns and very few know how different guns work.

Or the lack of cops at shooting matches.

Different people have different interests. Just because someone is a cop doesn't mean that they're a "gun person". Believe it or not some cops got into the business to help and serve, not shoot guns. A gun is a merely a tool of the trade. The vast majority of cops will never have to use that tool in the course of their career.

It's like expecting all carpenters to be hammer collectors. Ridiculous.

I'm not disagreeing. Off topic, my uncle, who is a carpenter, does have quite a few hammers lol.

I merely made a statement based on what I've seen.

There are 250 cops on the force in Abilene. I know of 1 that shoots regularly at any sort of match. Surely I would occasionally see a handful at some sort of shoot, be it a bullseye or action match if they were interested.

I'm not holding it against anyone, LEO or not, for not competing... there are a whole lot of gun owners and very few shooters out there, and the ratio doesn't seem to differ between LEO or non-LEO gun owners.

I guess most don't go around shooting at matches in uniform, and the ones that don't wear the uniform prob don't announce they are police.

I've shot at cop only matches.

I carry a glock 22 on and a glock 43 off.

So you go around at every match asking each and every competitor how they earn a living or did you just make an assumption? I for one have no interest in spending my off duty time standing around waiting to shoot plates and targets. We receive our training in other ways. Thanks for your concern though.

My original comment was on a post stating that not all police officers are gun nuts. I agreed. Hell when I took my ltc class a while back, the instructor (an ex police officer),also said this. My assumption is that those of you who are LEO (or not) on the firearms section of this forum just might be gun people.

And yes, if you spend All day with a group of people at a match, occupation is going to come up.

For some reason it seems like people who have a chip on their shoulder about Police love to make the statement "Police arent gun people".

I guess it makes them feel better about themselves that maybe they know more about guns than some Police do.

Not all Police are gun people just like not all Military are gun people.

Most of the Police I am around are very much gun people and many compete in matches with other Police and not in non sworn matches.

In the times we live in now a lot of Police are reluctant to go around telling strangers that they are Police.

I'm a cop. I'm a gun guy. I'm not a gun competition guy. I don't get anything out of it. That's just me.

When I was on SWAT we had competitions all the time as part of our training. Sometimes it was just within our own team. Sometimes we competed against other teams. There's even an annual all SWAT competition put on by the Texas Tactical Police Officers Association.

People who are into guns are passionate about them. It's often their biggest pastime. Some people are into old cars or hot rods and are equally passionate about it. To many cops, a gun is just a necessary tool of the trade. Many do not excel at using it. But the excel in many different areas. I have a coworker that's a child abuse detective. Lousy shot but the best danged child abuse detective you'll ever meet. It's about drive and passion. She doesn't care about guns. She cares about kids.

As for me, I love plinking. I love shooting turtles on a tank. I love spotting some far off dead tree limb and seeing if I can shoot it off. I love shooting at distant rocks with my AR and watching dust fly off it at impact. I couldn't care less about shooting in 3 gun matches, or dressing up like an old west gunslinger and shooting cowboy action, or any other competition.

I do love to set up several skeet throwers at the deer lease, then have everyone throw a little money in a hat and shoot a round robin. Winner takes all. Yes, there will be BBQ and beer involved.

I am a "gun guy" and I have never been to a competition, I don't care about punching holes in paper or shooting a steel plate at long distances, and I don't practice SWAT or Army Ranger drills with firearms.

Way back when I was still working and Paraordance was still in Canada only making frames, I ordered one of their frames and had the guts, and slide of my Colt Series 70 installed. Carried that, with confidence for years, until they in their corporate wisdom decreed no more single action semis. Fine, went with a big old S&W in .45 that could be double or single action. Finally went with an H&K USP-1. At the firearms instructor course, the instructors could not, not matter how hard they tried, create any sort of malfunction in that gun. Later, when I was mostly at a desk, I carried a Glock 36 and used the H&K for kicking in doors or working the river. Right as I was retiring they decided you had to carry a Glock 19.

Now I am back to a Para P-12 or HiCap with an occasional G-26 thrown in during the summer out here in the desert. I did, and still do, compete when the opportunity arises.

I went from a Glock 23 to a Colt 1911 almost 20 years ago. The 1911 fits my hand like no other. I can hit what I shoot at. As a police academy firearms instructor for over 20+ years, I could tell when scoring targets who was using a 1911 and a Glock. Carry what you can hit with, nothing else matters.
