I have a cabin out in the country where I do not have electricity, but use a generator to run everything. I am not there all of the time so I cover the generator up with a tarp when I am gone. I have lately started having a problem with rats chewing on my spark plug cable, gas line and any other type of line.

I have put out rat poison around and under the generator. Any ideas of what else I can do to stop this problem. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Moth balls

The best luck I've had is take 1-2 bars of Irish Spring soap, shave of pieces with your pocket knife all around the genny and area. Not sure why or how it works but it does and it has kept my trailer rodent free for 5 years while others in deer camp fight them left and right.

Buy a small wood shipping crate to store the generator in it

Buy or build box, or plastic tote for generator.
Consider deep cycle battery bank? Solar. I used to have same set up. No inverter, bayyerirs, solar. No noise.

The tarp over the generator basically gives the rats a nice place of solitude and safety under which to live. As far as rodents go, better to have it completely exposed than the situation you have. Moth balls will certainly help. Making a box cover that the rats can't get into will be better. However, if your generator isn't on bricks or a slab of some sort, rodents can just burrow under the side.

Like he said ^^^ covering it is why they want in there. Just like many people leave the hood on their camp vehicles open as a deterrent to rodents.

Several years ago before I ran electricity I had a similar issue. I got a good, sturdy pallet and put a piece of good plywood on it. Primed and painted it. I built a box to go over it and put vents on two sides with a thick screen mesh the mice couldn't chew thru or get through. I cut holes for the cables, ran them and sealed them. Problem solved and it even more quiet. In fact, you couldn't hear it at all when you were inside.
