I know we have talked about it before but I can't find the post.

What tricks and tools can we use to keep the vermin out and off of wiring?

One of the best things is to leave the hood up. their not as likely to make a nest in the engine compartment that way.

Poison poison poison. I've tried a mix of hot sauce, hot spices mix in a spray bottle with a little liquid soap and spray all over. Just a thought.

Don't laugh but put several drops of peppermint essential oil on cotton balls and place in and around the vehicle (or whatever). Don't have to have many. It works on mice and rats, not sure about squirrels.

I tie a string on the cotton balls and that way I can remove and refresh.

BUT don't get the oil on hour hands, hard to get off and you will smell like Christmas candy for days (doesn't taste good either).

Leave the hood up and seat out then use drier fabric sheets. Zip tie them to the wires and it will help for rats and mice.

Fill pantyhose up with moth balls and place in the compartments in concern.

This works, but use several and don't forget to take them out when you use the machine. I learned this from a couple farmers and we used in under tractor hoods while the tractors sat dormant in winter.

I asked that question earlier this month. Stxranchman recommended the liquid tomcat bait, so I gave it a try. I couldn't find it in any of the stores around here so I had to order it online. Went to the local feed store and got a couple small chick waterers and so far I've had to fill it three or four times. I don't know if it's evaporating or getting drank like crazy but I have not seen a single mice around camp (between the barn, trailers and cabin) so I'm pretty much sold. Give it a try!!

If it is in a dry area there is nothing better than these:

It is the better mouse trap. Poison works great until your dog eats the dead mouse.

ive tried it all. most will work at times. tried traps, poison, even golden marlin fly bait and soda. weve had thousands of dollars of damage done by rats and mice in the last 2 years. so....... i expanded our operation and branched into cat farming. theres a bunch of them and they are reproducing also. cats are the most consistent tool for rat control. every day i see one of those suckers with a dead rat in its mouth.
also, weve had 2 big owls move into around the house trees. they are helping alot as well.

leaving the hood open on stuff will work but cant do that out here in west texas cause the wind will relocate it

Hood up. Air vents closed. Trap anything in the cab immediately--once they nest others return after you kill them. They leave a trace scent that will attract other rats. Poison doesn't really work all that well in the brush country because you get replacement rats for the ones you kill. Look for pack rat nests near your vehicles -- If you find any nests within 60-75 yards tear them up and scatter them-- the rats will likely get predated if you destroy the nest. (Pack part nest are piles of debris. Be careful when scattering the nest--snakes often live in there with the rats.

You can get a pepper impregnated tape from Honda (they developed it for Hawaii where rats are a REAL problem) It is expensive but works. Wrap anything that looks as if has been chewed rap it--wear gloves when you do so. Rodents chew constantly to sharpen their teeth--they really like wiring.

Tie snakes by the tail to the undercarriage.

Or just don't leave it at the lease
